It has the following output ports: 1) HDM OUT Digital Audio Output 1) Optical 2) Coaxial AV OUT 1) 1.Audio R and L 2) 2.Audio R and L 3) Video 4) S-Video COMPONENT OUT 1) PR 2) Y 3) Pg My inquiry is, 1)can i purchase a 5.1 channel speaker system (5 speakers and 1 Subwoofer) and connect it directly to my DVD recorder? 2)what kind of cables should i expect in the speaker system? 3)to what ports shall it connect in the DVD recorder?

You can get a powered speaker system but with the analog outputs you have, you will be limited to stereo. 2. 16 gauge speaker cables and the necessary audio cables. Depends on which way you go. 3. Depends again on the receiver you will get.
