I took out my rear deck speakers on my 1997 Grand Marquis and have some replacement Polk 6x9's I want to pop in. The process was quick and easy to pull these stock speakers out BUT I am stuck after taking them out trying to ID which wires are positive or negative?

Most every other speaker I have taken out has a marking on the speaker or the harness connected to the speaker, the 97 marquis appears to have NO markings on the speaker or harness that I can id which is pos or neg!!!

To complicate things more the two wires on each side (rear deck) BOTH have stripes, so I can't even go by that (in my mind stripe was negative solid was positive) but I haven't messed with car stereo stuff in over 20 yrs...

I also asked this question in a grand marquis forum with some pics if that helps?

but thought this might get me a faster more accurate reply.

This is what I am doing (using stock speakers harness cut off old speaker then gonna rewire two wires to it to my new speakers so i don't have to cut the cars original wires)

But I am stuck as to which is pos or negative based on the harness and speaker there are no markings, and the wires of the car itself again are confusing, both are striped etc so I just need to know which on the car are pos neg so i can follow that thru the harness I wire and connect properly to my new speakers.

Right or wrong I went out started swapping wires around turned up music and this is what sounded the best so I left it as that.

I didn't even mess with the fronts so this was only the rears

Grey/light blue -

tan/yellow +

orange/red -

brown/pink +

and doing the fade and balance trial and error over and over that is what sounded even solid and in phase with each other, so regardless of the wirelayouts (none of which exactly shows same colors same year and sorta conflict each other) this was trial and error the best sound I could get out of them.

Now they have full rich sound with bass and mix well with the fronts so I am 99% sure they are correct just from swap this listen swap that listen etc etc.

Brad,
Thanks for that info where did it come from?

I tried the left rear speaker the way this diagram says (with right speaker also how this says) and for some reason I had no bass in the sound, when I swapped them around (as noted above) the sound became much more complete/full, so I assumed that was correct and left it as such.

Now you got me wondering here again...hehe

Welcome Bill. It came from a site called The 12 Volt. A wealth of info is available there if you sign up (free). Good luck.
