I want to upgrade the factory speakers in my new car and need some advice on what types are okay to look for. I'll explain, Currently i have 2 x 5 1/4" speakers in the rear door panels and the same in the front door panels. Added to this i have tweeters mounted in the dashboard all working from a blaupunkt rd4 factory head unit.
I am not looking for an amazing new head unit nor any for any amps to be installed as i do not wish to modify the car in anyway. I am just looking to replace the speaker system to reproduce better sound. But, i have some confusion over what speaker types to fit in the doors i.e 2 way, 3 way, bass/mid? I am assuming i can leave the tweeters alone and working and just replace the speakers.
What would be the speaker types i need to look for to get the best from my basic setup?
Coax will be cheaper than a comp set almost any way you look at it. But if you already have tweets with a cross over installed in the dash, depending on the location of the speakers, You could just buy 5-1/4 woofers (should come w x-over). Then you would in effect, have a comp set. Couple of things to be aware of. If you speakers are too far away from the Dash area, you might have some issues with sound. Also, only an amp would maximize the performance of this set up. If you wanted to keep everthing as is and not get into spending anything you don't have too, then it might not be something you want to do, though with or without an amp, I would go with a comp set up. . . .. that is assuming to speaker location supports it.
As for the back, you can just go with Coax(2 or 3-way, they're all the same physical size. But you can run as rear fill or full range (which ever you prefer). Cut and dry.
Or, you can go Coax (2 or 3-Way) all around, But when doin that, you should prolly take in consideration that when you hook up your front channel, you will most likely have changed your impedance from 4-Ohms. This might already be the case seeing as you had tweets installed and pre-exsiting 5-1/4's. It's NOT likely to cause problem, but if your radio is not meant to run at that impedance, you could damage your HU and possibly your speakers.
Some budget performance speakers would be Infinity Kappa or Reference series. Boston Acoustic, Polk, Premiere, Alpine, Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, lower end Mb Quarts, Diamond Audio, CDT, DLS, Focal. You really cant go wrong with any of them. All of them are good, RF and Kicker at the bottom of my choices. What ever you do, just Stay away from Sony X-Plode . .. . . . .
