Best Practices for blind scanning multiple dishes with only 1 LNB?

Hey all,

I have a Fortec Lifetime Ultra running an older bin 279Ta_EU

I haven't upgraded the bin yet just because when something is working, I don't like to screw with it.

My dish is fairly large (about 2.5 metres in diameter) since I live in Costa Rica. It's pointed towards 119W, however I notice I can catch some 110 and 121 channels also (even having only one LNB).

What i currently do is blind scan 119W, then also blind scan 110W and then 121W to get the most channels I can. The problem obviously is with so many duplicate channels. Aaside from manually editing my channels, is there any suggestions you can make to reduce them?

I'm thinking like not scanning ALL polarity on each dish, but maybe vertical on one, horizontal on the other? That kind of thing.

Any suggestions welcome =)

- Make sure you got 3 LNBs for 110/119/121 not one LNB
- DISEqC Assign to unique port to each Sat
- 119 port 1 (LNB-1)
- 110 port 2 (LNB-2)
- 121 port 3 or 4 (Standard)

You may have to trial and error until you get it right
It is normal for few selective channels double as long as you are not using one LNB for everything

Best of luck

Make sure you are using a 4 input DISEqC switch as well

Hi King,

That's the thing I only have one LNB at moment as mentioned in my post. Without buying/installing any others, what could I do in my scanning methods to perhaps reduce the duplicates ?

Shipping things here don't arrive that often heh so I plan to purchase 1-2 LNBs when I next visit the US...this thread is just about in the meantime.

Various - If you are pointed at 119 and when you check the other sats you are getting some kind of signal is a reflection signal of 119 and not the actual sat you believe to be scanning. You are getting duplicates because while you believe to be scanning one sat you are actually scanning 119 over again and what you are getting is "Mirror Channels". The funny part about this is that they will actually show up as USA (under 110) and it's actually 119... One LNB can only receive one sat unless you are using a motorized dish!

I will admit what you say is very interesting and I've looked into what other sites report, but I don't see anything else to support that.

If anyone else has any info on this, by all means pass it on.

By the way "Mirror Channels" is what I call it. This is really a problem when using DishPro LNB and not setting the DISEcQ ports correctly or not turning the power off of one LNB while scanning the other.

PRFRMNJ,

Thanks for the explanation and it agrees with other stuff I have read. What i find weird is that I am getting a few channels amongst all the uplicates that I don't get if I blind scan 119W alone.

I'll try tomorrow to wipe out everything and try to compare to tell you exactly which channels these are. I think some of the PPV I don't get when only scanning 119, but after I scan 110 I have them.

Hey Varius
If you are not using a Invacom QPH-031 LNB and you are only using one for 119 or 110,
(Circular Polarization)
there is no way to pickup EchoStar 9 @ 121.oW.
(Linear polarization).

AMC 16 @ 118.75 is a hair away from 119.
Maybe you are picking up some channels from there.
Try a TP scan, one Bird at a time. You may also have to move your Dish a hair or so. Like
Mc Sunny would say, it's all about testing.

You can get different multiple Satellites with one LNB

The problems with that:
- Transponders will overlap
- You will loose many of what I call channel subcode
- You will get so many multiple duplicates and triplicates
- You may not get all channels due beam strength on one sat than the other

There are ways and techniques with the help of modern receivers and larger dishes.
Best advice LNBs are so inexpensive get a second or third save a headache.
