Hate to do this but i have to know.... is it a big deal to underpower a sub?now i know this is not very clear because i didnt specify on what kinda sub or any thing well here goes i want a single 12,or 15 inch sub setup but i would like to try and stay with my jl audio amp now i was looking at the jl w6's because there really nice looking subs well the rms on the subs are 400 and the amp is 250 the other sub i was thinking about and i know this is a very different type of sub... but is like a 15 inch kicker solo L5 like i said i dono what the big deal is and i was wondering if i could get away with this if not no biggy cause i have a secondary amp i can use for more power just would like not to use it cause i dont want to have a big drain on my alt. thanks in advance for any help and for takeing the time to help me out
Only thing with underpowering it is you increase your odds of clipping it to death because of trying to push you amp to its' limit. A high powered amp at 25% sounds better than a crappy one at 75%.
im sorry what do u mean by your amp? if your asking on what i have i have a jl audio 250/1 and a audio art 100h.c. which does 2 x 50W @ 4 ohms 2 x 235W @ 2 ohms 2 x 550W @ 1 ohm 1 x 1100W @ 1 ohm bridged but i would prefur not to use it at 1 ohm cause i dont want to upgrade my electrical system yet thanks again
I was just proofreading my post. My spelling gets out of hand sometimes. If you push a small amp to its' limit you risk sending clipped signals to your sub, and distortion is any speaker's worst nightmare. So yeah, I guess if you don't set your gains right, you CAN hurt a sub underpowering it.
