I am kind of new to box making. Is it standard the more port area you have the lower the tuning goes?

sealed plays a flatter tune then a ported box so it kinda depends on how u have your ported tuned if u know what i mean someone correct me if im wrong

to me sealed sounds like a more controlled or constant sound. it completely depends on the sub in order to know what box will be best for it.

here's the thing....the lower you tune a ported box, the less control the sub has at higher freq. so there are trade-offs. :-)

hitting low really depends on the sub. some subs hit low really well while others don't.

indeed it does Chad, good point.

but if you want balanced output across the scale, and don't want to sacrifice "muddy" :-) sound in the upper sub bass region, go sealed. imo

"hitting low really depends on the sub. some subs hit low really well while others don't"

Technically any sub can play a 1hz tone, not that hard to do but how much power is required to keep it in control is design dependant. Depending on size, shape and tune a ported enclosure has the potential to be LOUDER not deeper. A ported box may loose control at higher power levels due to the loss of acoustic suspension. Because a sealed box retains its acoustic suspension throughout its entire playing range that will allow it to play through a much more vast set of frequencies which would only be cut by subwoofer design limitations. I would say a sealed box will play lower but if the same sub in a box able to play equally low the ported box would be louder. Polo.
