Gold Member Username: BestmankindLos Angeles, CA USA Post Number: 5640 Registered: Oct-05 | i know what you mean cadillac. i did buy a used sub before and it was okay but i was always watching the volume. the re sx 18 i got was brand new. |
Silver Member Username: FrkkevinLake Worth, Texas US Post Number: 785 Registered: Nov-05 | I've always bought brand new.. never know how the sub was really treated. They may say it was never over-powered but you never know if the gains were set right and the sub was being clipped .. or someone like chad could have had the sub... wearing out the suspesion so much with his love for "big.... 'women'.." and have the sub bottom out and then over extend :-D |

Silver Member Username: RiskybPost Number: 204 Registered: Feb-06 | "but you never know if the gains were set right and the sub was being clipped" Not trying to be a dick but, that wouldn't hurt the subwoofer at all. Distortion does not hurt speakers at all. The only thing that is bad for a subwoofer or speaker is letting it get too hot. Ask yourself, is rock music bad for speakers? Rock music is distortion. I can play a subwoofer on a square clipped wave all day long or over power it all day long with no problems. I can exceed the mechanical and thermal limits of it and watch it fail in short order. |
Silver Member Username: CadillacdbHouston , TX Post Number: 845 Registered: Aug-05 | Actually a clipped signal leads to over heating so a clipped signal could and would be the most likely culprit for leading to over heating in most cases Bcae1.com Exert below If your speakers are capable of handling significantly more than your amplifier can produce, driving them with a clipped signal will not likely hurt them. If the speakers can handle 3 or 4 times the power that your amplifier can produce, there's virtually no way to damage your speakers (no matter how clipped the signal is). If your speakers are rated for the same power handling as your amplifier is capable of producing cleanly, driving them with a clipped signal for extended periods of time may cause speaker damage and/or premature failure. If your speakers are rated for the same power handling as your amplifier is capable of producing cleanly, driving them with a square wave signal for extended periods of time will likely cause speaker damage. |
Silver Member Username: CadillacdbHouston , TX Post Number: 846 Registered: Aug-05 | im not trying to stomp on ur toes on anything im just trying to point out that you cant just say that clipping doesnt cause problems because its does.. you went straight to physical affect where as kevin stated one common cause Cause, clipping common affect, over heating and then premature failure |
Gold Member Username: RedlinerWilmington, Ma Post Number: 2567 Registered: Jun-05 | lol grant that was one of the funniest things ive ever heard a squared sine wave will rip right through a sub thats the most common reason why subs blow try grabbing a 3000 watt amp on a stock alt and just letting it rip at 1 ohm on a subthat usually runs about 3 krms daily and so how long it lasts might be a while but it will happen |
Silver Member Username: RiskybPost Number: 208 Registered: Feb-06 | Your right cadillacdb clipping does cause heat, but thats not the point. Clipping alone does not hurt a subwoofer. Only the heat resulting from the clipping harms the speaker. To just say "don't clip your amp's signal" isn't enough. Charlie with the situation you just described it all depends on the subwoofer. If It can keep itself cool, it won't fail. Looking back I really shouldn't have said anything. It was late and I was just nit-picking. |
