Subwoofer... Polk PSW 450 vs. JBL PB12... Any opinions?

I recently purchased a Yamaha HTR-5550 and I have my front, center, and rear speakers ready to go. Now I need to look at my options for a sub. A friend of mine has a SVS 16-46PCi and I really like the SVS subs, but I am not able to to committ to that level of quality YET.
Now I need some help with a sub in the $250-$350 range. I have found a Polk PSW 450 for $199 new online and the JBL PB12 for $270 new online. But obviously online I can't hear or "feel" the sound quality. I mostly want it for watching DVD's and some music.
Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

Surprisingly, I think Velodyne makes great subwoofers. I know the brand name isn't top of the line home audio, but I have an infinity alpha 7.1 system and I wouldn't trade my velodyne for any infinity sub or polk for that matter. JBL is made by Harman (infinity) so I would expect it is similarly underpowered, though I've never heard it personally.
