HELP me BUILD A 6.1 CHANNEL system in $1200

Unregistered guest | hi guys.. i am a newbe in the world of high level acoustics.i want help from all you friends to build me a bonechilling awsome surround sound system using 6.1 or higher amp and a good sub which can be felt at the same time heard.max amount $1200.please help me mix and match the system.i prefer harman kardon, denon , onkyo and yamaha amps.i cant make up on any speakers..please tell me all those components that u have heard and fit my max limit.... so pleaseeee help |

Do you already have a DVD player or do you need that too? I would start with a 5.1 speaker system, as the 6th center surround speaker you can always add at a later date and it isn't very important as it mostly provides matrixed sound mixed from other channels and is not a discrete separate channel. Expect to pay at least $700 for a reasonable 5.1 speaker system at this budget, as you need a self-powered subwoofer. Then you will have to spend between $300-$400 for an AV surround receiver and the remainder on a dvd player. You will need 8 ohm speakers (or a minimum of 6 ohm speakers, as receivers in this price range will not drive 4 ohm speakers with any reliability. |

I also bought Wharfedale Diamond center, Diamond 8.3 fronts, and Diamond 8.2 surrounds for a total of $550. This system sounds great, but sound is relative to the person who hears it. I believe anyone who listens to the Wharfedale speakers would enjoy them for the price. Read the review in this months What Hi-Fi Magazine, they received 5 stars and a best buy rating even when compared to speakers twice the price. I have never heard the Wharfedale subwoofer so I can't comment on it. As far as receivers, I like my Kenwood but for $400-500 you can get a lot of different receivers that will perform pretty good and you can always add power amps at a later stage if the power of the receiver is not as much as you would like. Or you can pick up Athena speakers from BestBuy for around the same price I paid for the Wharfedales. Good Luck! |

Unregistered guest | hi man.. thanks for a quick reply.. well i will tell you more about what i am up to now.actually i am in india.and geting a high quality and big names in acoustics is difficult and costly here.i have kept dvd player out of this budget. so i have solely got 1200$ for amp, sub, speakers. i think a good amp is the heart of the system.. so i have almost finalised on yamaha rx-1400,7.1 sys. i heard good reviews about it.i heard that its available for 600$.cause thats how i have divided my budget.for the rest of 600$ i am looking at a good sub which can be felt,and rest 5 channels. i liked ur advice to add the sixth channel later on.so what do u think.. is yamaha a good option ??? i have kept it above hr avr-330,430,630 models.i dont know the performance of denon and onkyo models below 600$.concluding ... i guess a amp in a range of 500-600$ and surround speaker sys in the range of 600-700$.. in short i want help for u on deciding the best components according to my segmentation.. or you can gimme one of ur liking if u think that its better configured.. i seek ur advice, help and direction ... thanks |

Anonymous | I just purchased the Kenwood KRF-X9080 for €500 (on EBay, it actually costs €700) wich is an excellent 7.1 (!) receiver. I connected a SoundBlaster Audigy2 (6.1/7.1 on creative speakers) to it (€230). This equipment is all THX-certified, that's kinda the best quality assurance on the hifi-market today. You could do without the audigy, if you have a standalone dvd-player (or intend to buy one). Anyway, that leaves you with aproximately €270 left for a decent speakersystem, and that is not that much, but should work for small rooms. |

Pleasant, SC Post Number: 607 Registered: Dec-03 | As long as you get fairly efficient 8 ohm speakers (preferably 90db and higher, although you could probably live with 88db's, the most important part of a system (given adequate amplification) is the speakers--and by a large margin. The difference between the amplification in low to mid-fi receivers is nominal. The biggest difference is probably in features and ease of remote usage. You would never hear the difference between amp sections that are within 20-30 watts of each other. But you will hear dramatic differences between many speakers and the speakers interactions with your room. As long as you get a good self-powered subwoofer, the amount of power you need to drive efficient speakers with midrange and tweeters to very loud levels is very low. It is the woofers that require the big power---hence getting a self-powered subwoofer is a must in this system (and most systems). I like the Yamaha 1400 at its price point, but if it means compromising significantly on speakers it isn't worth it. A less expensive Onkyo or Yamaha may allow you to buy a better speaker package. Since you are located in India, the choice in speakers is probably much more limited than in the US. As Harman Kardon Int'l owns JBL and Infinity speakers (besides their own line of receivers), you should try to listen to a JBL system within your budget. At this price you aren't going to get wall-shaking bass that goes down to 25hz or below, but if you are careful you should be able to get "clean" bass without too much distortion that mates well with the satellite or bookshelf speakers. |

I don't know if this lives up to your "bass thru your spine" requirement but it would be pretty darn loud in my opinion. You can also get Wharfedale speakers on Ebay if you are not able to get them elsewhere, that is where I bought mine ($550 us dollars new). Wharfedale is a British company so I would think that getting some sent to India would not be too much of a problem but I am in the U.S so what do I know  These are truelly fine speakers in my opinion and I think that given your budget they would work well. Unregistered guest | thats right mate... and i made a big blunder.. i miscalculated the cost of yamaha rx1400. i just called the dealers here .. they say its price is 800$.thats 150$ over the US price.so i guess i will have to keep the margin of 20% in the stuff..but its ok. and gregory what do u suggest in amp models. i guess 400$ range is best for me right now.i will check all posts and keep on hunting this week. harman kardon is readily available here but many suggested me against it..i'll cya now in 2 days... thanks for the invaluable advice... and what about marantz sr5400 |

Pleasant, SC Post Number: 608 Registered: Dec-03 | Vols is right-- Of the 3 systems listed, the JBL SCS300.7, the JBL even gives you 7 speakers plus a powered subwoofer for a list price of $699. Hopefully your dealer will give you at least 10% off. The Energy system costs $800 and doesn't have as good a subwoofer and the HSU system is only sold in the US--not likely to have dealers in India, but is an amazing bargain at $499 in the USA for those on a strict budget. |

Let's hope there are some readers of this in India that can steer you to a good local dealership. Or at least a dealership not far away from you. But you might try the various websites of the different companies. JBL may have their own website, but as they are owned by Harman International, you may try that website. You should be able to find all the websites you need by enterring the names in your browser. Most major manufacturers often have an area on their websites where they list dealerships in different countries. But I definitely recommend spending more on the speakers and getting 6-8 ohm speakers, as even inexpensive surround receivers should have no problem driving them. And the more efficient the speakers (over 90 db's), the less you have to worry about the power of the amp section. |

I would suggest that you call the folks in Chennai I mentioned earlier and see if they can find you someone in Delhi or if they have the option of shipping some stuff to you. The problem here is, that since there are not many dealers here so you don't get much discounts forget about deals n stuff. In case u want to cover up the entire 5.1 setup in 60,000, then u will have to go in the package products these people have to offer..i mean the HT packages like Sony n Onkyo have. But if u ask me..then ummmmmm rather have patience n save more and build up slowly. Better have a good one when u putting in so much of money..and take my word for it..its worth it really.. |

But u can try Nad and PSB or B&W combo. As a stereo setup its working great for me.... u can also try the HK and JBL, though in comparison i did'nt like that sound...but then its a matter of personal choice.. what i would suggest u is take as many demos as u can in bangalore...and decide what comes in ur budget and what sound u tend to like more... |

I purchaced (9) of them for my denon 7.1 home theater setup and am extreemly happy with the quality and sound they produce. You can get them at circuit city stores on sale for $24 dollars american all of the time, they regularly caust $30 dollars each. to further improve there sound i replaced the tweeters with models that i found at PARTS EXPRESS, - partsexpress.com i used AUDAX 1" titanium replacements $20 dollars each when i could afford to buy them. |

I got an Onkyo TX-NR801 for about INR 35K... and its retail price locally is about 1 Lakh! I understand this may not be possible, but if you can, then there's nothing like it. On the speaker front, *ALL* international brands are legally available here with warranty and all. In fact, Wharfedate is actually cheaper here than in the US ! Most of these Indian dealers also ship anywhere in India. sps_2k1 Unregistered guest | hi friends.., i havent been on this forum since long.. cause i had been surveying.. i checked out some brands . i started with the onkyo..their amps the 501,601,801,901. their 800,900 amps are good but their speaker set sucks.. also the prices are too f***ing illogically high. the 601 was for 48000. then i checked out yamaha.. but the dealer didnt had the rx1400 or 2400. but he showed me some 550 .. type models. i was not amused.he had warfdale speakers too.. i hear they r cheap in price. then i went to check denon.. boy was it good.!! i loved the denon 3805.it was juz awsome but the dealer was askin for 95000. its US price comes to under 60000. then i checked out the JAMO speakers .. they r really cool.. they churned out some good quality music and awsome bass.. but then that speaker 5.1 setup was over 1 lakh.(100000) all the prices i mentioned are in indian rupee. dollar equivalent can be obtained by dividing by 48. now that i am all the more confused , i juz dont know what to do. importing a amp seems a good option but i will have to think about it.. i can save a hell lotta dough if i import it myself from a friend or relative. then i can use all that extra money to buy better speakers. i will check out more in the time to come and lets see what i finalise on buying.. so keep mailing friends.. and thanks ebirbal and manish |

I know these equipments are expensive over here, but then make sure, if u arrange for an import, the warranties are also covered for. So maybe how u can go is, first build up a 2 channel setup, driven by a A/V receiver, later add on the speakers, when u have arranged for enough money. what do u say.... |

My need is also similar to sps but i m more than willing to follow the route suggested by manish. Been thinking of getting a 7.1 receiver (for future expansions). An excellent pair of floor standers (continuous power output 100-150 watts range). and if i can afford for now the surrounds, center and sub. The budget stands at 100K INR. The best deal i have got till now is Onkyo 502 [Receiver] : 38K Onkyo 4600 {C/s] : 11K Onkyo 107 [Sub] : 23K Jamo E650 [Floor] : 34K Post discounts the entire cost comes to around 80K. And if you add the cashback due to buying on card, you can knock off another 3-4K from the price. So net cost to me will come to around 75K. But after listening to the system, I think there is better sound available within my budget. Unregistered guest | Hi Folks, I have done some listening over the weekend for the following brands - Acoustic Energy (Evo) - Wharfedale (Diamond 8.4) - JBL (Northbridge series-E80, E10, EC25, E150P) - KEF (Coda) Found Quad and B&W to be prohibitively expensive. Need info from veterans as to what amp would go well with this. Checked out Denon but somehow felt that the surround effect was not very enchanting with that. Also would appreciate if you can point to some site where I can see audiophile opinions on these brands or can provide inputs yourselves. sps, if you can mail me at (cool_bamit at rediffmail dot com) i can get in touch with you about what you have explored in B'lore and we can share notes. ebirbal Unregistered guest | MSRandhawa, the best speakers are the ones your ears like best. With your budget, you have several options, but you need to decide the primary purpose of AV system - music or movies or both ? Depending on your choice, there are several AV receivers you should try - Onkyo, Denon, Nad, HK, Yamaha, etc. Do some listning tests and see what you like best - and enjoy ! BTW, this thread was started by sps, and its very rude to "hijack" his thread posting stuff not directly related to his querry. If you have a question, you should start your own thread. Please refrain from asking further questions in this thread. |

Bought it all from tweeters, cuase the sats were white and yamaha was demo. never faced a single problem. this was strictly for movies. The soun is so tight and the punch of the sub is felt in your guts. Esp U571 "charges in the water" :P. People get goosebumps when I demo. We love it. I have wired the second room from my Yamaha where I plan to put 2 speakers for music. Hope this helps SPS. others any thoughts ? |

Bronze Member Username: BuckcrazyPost Number: 53 Registered: Nov-04 | hey all desi folks out there glad to see U guys are keeping up with times eh i am in canada here and was taken back with the progress made in India about this av world Now it is great that our brothers can find these great systems locally now two points of advice any one who is spending hard earned rupees Denon is great in HT setup and NAD has best of both worlds and if UR importing it from US/Europe Pioneer Elite also gives great sound at cheap prices i have to say ONKYO is not honest in thier power ratings and has a safety circuit that cuts out power it only feeds about 50wpc so i would say stay away but that is me,one thing though over here it is a norm that u can bargain the price between 15-25 % i have not seen that happen there so true prices U can obtain is by takein US prices and takeing 20% off and then adding customs if u know how that should be a fair price or just give the equilent of us retail to the local dealer now as far as warranty goes most companies do not offer int'l warranty so local is good and how do u manage 110 volt systems on 240v that will be interesting to note and thanks someone brought up the name SONODYNE that brought memories of my teenage i had a system that i adored and my friends would come on over for hours to listen thanks keep it up guys |

In fact there are several Indian brands that could very well compete with multinational brands (Candence, Sonodyne, Lithos, Space, Pulz to name a few) - its a pity that many of us dont have faith in local brands Coming to Onkyo - I am only too happy that it has a saftey protection circuit that cuts the power down - I dont want a fried speaker or amp under any condition. Is only too easy to short speaker wires while trying to experiment, moving stuff etc. Note that this protection circuit swings into action only when it detects a constant signal for several seconds - something that can only be reproduced under lab conditions or you are doing something really bad - you will *never* *ever* come across such situaton with real world music. |

I suggest a similar approach to you too. Take your time and invest in one or two components at a time(you'll need to save for CD/DVD/SACD players as well!) Can anyone tell me how can I get HSU/Velodyne subs in Mumbai? Basically I'm looking at good subs for music. |

It all worked to under Rs.52,000 (near USD 1,200). And I can't complain. My nest rocks! Had to tweak around a bit with the sub though. Am more into music than theatre thrills. Got good results on natural acoustic outputs like those of Al di Meola, Mike Oldfield, Menuhin etc. |

Unregistered guest | I found out B&W dealer in Bangalore (X Canvas Studio). I have narrowed down on the speakers DM 603 S3 (L and R) LCR 600 S3 (center) DM 601 S3 (Surround) Not sure of the sub. May be B&W ASW 600 or REL STRATA 5. REL is 68KRs and i dont find delears in Bangalore (only Chennai) REL is going to stretch my budget. Any comments appreciated. Questions: 1. Do i go for "AV reveicer" or a "pre processor - amplifier" combo. As new technology blossoms each day, i can save my amplifier and change my pre processor if I go for "pre processor - amplifier" combo. Really confused here. 2. Sugato Unregistered guest | Karthik, it is very dfficult to benchmark AVRs - Harman Kardon, Denon, Marantz, NAD and Rotel are all leading manufactures with their own niche/ patented technologies - especially in the DSP and power mgmt circuits they use. They are all good in their own ways. You may also consider Onkyo and Yamaha, as they are well serviced in India. I'll also suggest you check out Sherwood and Cambridge Audio. |

Sugato Unregistered guest | Uma, Yamaha RXV 450 - it's 6.1 system (RXV 350 is 5.1) Plus some addl. DSP's - the price diff is marginal. With 450 you can match NS-P200 (6.1) speakers. But it's better to pick speakers of dedicated manufacturers - like JBL, Wharfedale, Definitive, Cerwin Vega, Sonodyne. A compo system would be more xpensive than HTiB - 25k (if in INR) is a tight budget for compo. Happy shopping m8! |

I had recently been to the AV Max Expo and I was extremely happy that I got to see and audition so many world-wide reputed brands under one-roof. Unfortunately I caught up with the action on the last day and hence could not make a purchase decision (I am a perfectionist and don't make purchase decisions easily) This thread is informative. Anonymous | Hi Uma, I just had a look at an offer by Yamaha. It was a HTIB package. It would cost you about INR 30K. Its labeled YP1 if I remember it properly Just go grab that system, its the best deal at about your budget. Never buy a Sony/Panasonic system if you have an ear for quality. Sony/Panasonic are good for people with moderate level of interest in music. Those system are nothing great once you push up the volume. I have auditioned the best available in India from these companies and I have to say that I wasn't impressed. If you have an ear for quality, go for Yamaha/Denon/Harman Cardon (All available in Indian market and a little over your budget). But if you like it loud, i.e. need both power and quality, go for seperates. But that is gonna burn a big hole in your wallet. |

How many channels of actual output you get depends on the source media etc. You need to understand various encoding formats. Also, dont expect these manuals to be very friendly. RX- V450 - 6.1 channel receiver NS-7390 floor standing speakers NS-P70 - center and 3 rear speakers YST - SW015 package comes to Singapore $ -1350 ( approx 36000 Rs, 750 US$) would be spending another 500$ to get a cassette deck and good CD player. Use an optical connection between DVD player and AMP, and it sounds awesome. Stereo -feel is good, but not clear on direct stereo vs Straight mode. |

Silver Member Username: CheapskatePost Number: 444 Registered: Mar-04 | i used to be proud of my onkyo 5 channel reciever for it's improved treble detail and extension over my NAD 2 channel reciever, but the cheap ($240 delivered) panasonic SA-XR55 7.1 channel class-d reciever that i just bought walks all over it in EVERY respect. bass is much tighter and deeper midrange is especially nice. vocals sound silky smooth and grain free now. this is the trait that stands out the most. treble detail is also improved. i can hear alot more texture in "white noise and buzzing" type sounds as well as crisper metallic percussion. that cheap reciever has more detail resolution in EVERY frequency as well as sounding much more relaxed at the same time. is as if the reciever is saying "don't mind me... it's like i'm not even here" LOL even when i put my ear right next to my tweeters, i can't hear any grain. now eddie isn't the only person here that will be raving about class-d recievers. |

Unregistered guest | I had an existing sonodyne tape deck and speakers(30 years old) i recently bought a yamaha rx-v457 and 2 rear speakers from sonodyne. The setup produces magical sound. Sonodyne a/v recievers are not really that good but thier speakers are unbelievable. Even after 30 years the front speakers are the richest sound i have ever heard. Highly recommend sonodyne speakers however with either an onkyo or yamaha reciever |
