i want to run 1600 watts rms, i want to get an HO alt but im not sure how big to go, my car is a chevy beretta with not very many accessories...no power windows, no cruise, pretty much its just a base model. anyway, how many amps should my new alternator be?

a 200 amp alt should be fined with your car.

200 amps should be fine.

watts RMS/12.6=amperage

add that amperage to the stock alt rating or 40-50 amps. that'll give you a good base to go by in choosing a HO alt size.

do know that getting one larger then needed won't hurt and will give you room to upgrade in the future.

check out excessive amperage or iraggi.
theres a group buy going on you might wanna look into. theres a thread in this section.

"watts RMS/12.6=amperage"

Divide that result by about three before you add 40-50A for the stock electronics.

Unless, of course, you play full volume test tones every second the car is running.

If average volume music current draw were equal to full volume test tone current draw everyone running 500w or more would need a giant alternator.

wouldn't hurt to factor in efficiency of the amp as well, but if your 1600w is class D it won't make a HUGE difference -- they're 75-80%.
