Gold Member Username: CarguyPost Number: 5522 Registered: Nov-04 | If you're going to play with turtles, make sure you wash your hands with soap! Their skin/shell has virus/germ all over. Not good for little kids. Other than that, they're fun to watch, especially the tiny ones, less than 1" in length. |
Gold Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 1022 Registered: Jan-06 | Isaac, what makes them especially dangerous is that turtles naturally like chickens, carry salmonella and can make you very sick. Some lizards like Iguana's carry it also. The little turtles have been known to carry multiple diseases that is why they are banned for sale in certain states, including here in IL. Polo.. |

Silver Member Username: GoatinU.S.A Post Number: 911 Registered: Jan-06 | Is this thread serious? Hell I never bought a turtle, but I cought a 35 pound snapper once. But I ate it. lol |
Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2831 Registered: Mar-04 | to the guy that bought the turtle at the mall... IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL TURTLES LESS THAN 4" IN LENGHT IN THE US! All those places that sell them are breaking the law....and just selling them can result in a $1500 per turtle fine. Our farm raises 100% disease free turtles (the law in louisiana makes us have to raise disease free turtles). We abide by the law and only sell outside of the US. (to my knowledge, turtles are the only animals raised in the US that are ILLEGAL to sell in the US) BTW...a UNTREATED turtle carries less than 1/10th of the salmonella that an iguana would carry. (was have a professors from Ole Miss, LSU, and other colleges on our side)...and dogs can carry thousands of times the amount of disease causing microbes...but we are pretty much getting f*cked over by a few individuals high up on the chain. We have developed a technique to make our turtles disease free from the git-go and went we get the market re-opened in the US...we will sell turtles w/ a bowl treatment. (just incase you contaminate the bowl) lol...i have hundreds of pages on studies we have done in conjuction w/ many colleges and firms. when we do get the market open...fell free to buy as many as you want (maybe i'll be able to afford termlab then...lmao) |
Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2832 Registered: Mar-04 | oh...and btw, i bet ya no one can guess how much we had to sell last years crop for...per turtle. (hint...we got f*cked) |
Gold Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 1025 Registered: Jan-06 | Where the hell are you shipping them? I never said sell me a turtle, GIVE'EM TO ME, LOL, mail his @ss via FedEx, haaaaa///Polo.. |
Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2835 Registered: Mar-04 | We ship them by the tens of thousands to China, Mexico, Japan, South American Countries, Europe. We usually ship 25,000 to 80,000 at a time. As bad a FedEx is w/ subs???...lol. FedEx + turtle = goop...lmao |
Gold Member Username: Sploosh56Ohio Post Number: 1262 Registered: May-04 | it's illegal to sell turtles in the state of ohio but you cancatch them and give them away for free or have it set up as buy this tank and get a free turtle |
Gold Member Username: Safe_crackerChicago, IL US Post Number: 1026 Registered: Jan-06 | Ok Marshal one other question, how the hell do you round them all up? Polo.. |
Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2837 Registered: Mar-04 |
w/ a laso...how else but really...every day during the summer we dig the eggs and put them in trays. we then wash the dirt off of them and run them through a chemical treatment. then put the trays of eggs in boxes w/ air holes...2 trays per box. put them in out incubating rooms. in 60 days they start to hatch...then we wash the hatchlings and count them out by hand and put them back in the trays. (we through away the eggshells and wash out the boxes) We then put the boxes w/ 125 turtles per box back in the incubators and lower the temp...the turtles then go into hybernation. by the way...we use Clorox by the pallet during the summer. the hair on my arms is usually bleached by June. |

Silver Member Username: GoatinU.S.A Post Number: 913 Registered: Jan-06 | Marshal man you are just full of suprises lol. You said you ship most of them to China, Mexico, Japan, South American Countries, and Europe Are they eating them or something? The reason I ask is because besides the texture I like the taste, But I have only tried snapper. What kind of turtles do you raise? |
Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2839 Registered: Mar-04 | It is mainly a pet market. But in China, they do put them in heated tanks and grow them to ~6" and eat them. We farm: red ear sliders, yellow ears, king turtles (river cooters), chicken turtles, painted, moon ears, musk turtles, mississippi map...and some others. pics: river cooter http://www.photolib.noaa.gov/coastline/images/big/line2354.jpg red ear http://www.roguer.com/modules/gallery/albums/news/Timmy.jpg red ear http://www.chelonia.org/Tscriptaelegans.jpg mississippi map http://www.dgif.state.va.us/wildlife/species/photos/030065-1.jpg musk (common) http://gallery.cs.umb.edu/gallery/albums/stinkpot/musk_hat_nickel.sized.jpg musk (logger head / razor back) http://www.samford.edu/schools/artsci/biology/vert-zoo-04s/photos/Sternotherus-m inor.jpg painted http://www.turtlesales.com/southern_paint.jpg |

Silver Member Username: GoatinU.S.A Post Number: 916 Registered: Jan-06 | NS. I like the mississippi map that is tight I always thought all turtles were dumb looking but all I ever seen is a bunch of land turtles a couple box turtles and one time I pulled a Huge snaper out of its hole by its tail Then when I got it on the bank my friend ziek taped it in the face with a piece of drift wood until it chomped down Hard and then he... well you probably dont want to know. I will just say this it let go. |

Gold Member Username: SouthernrebelMonroe, Louisiana USA Post Number: 2844 Registered: Mar-04 | i cant sell them man...its illegal. we dont have any maps right now anyways...we already sold last years crop over seas. i think the map is one of the coolest looking ones re raise (other than the paints). we have like 5 or 7 sub-species of maps too, they all look just alil different. btw...the reason they are called a map is because the bottom of their shell looks like a maze. sub-species: http://www.chelonia.org/Graptemysbarbourihatchling.jpg maze: http://moblog.co.uk/blogs/1989/moblog_4120990903ee9.jpg |

(i'm on the water at least 3days a week) plus...$7 an hour sucks a.ss |
