Best receiver to start with?

Of course you can tell I am new to the fta and I am ready to read and learn. I have heard the pansat 2700a is the best to start out with but was hoping for some input and some links as to the best places to learn. I have seen auctions on ebay for cd's that say complete info and software, are they worth checking out? Thanks Mach5
