I want a laptop to listen to music. Watch and burn dvd's. Do some basic word processing for my work as a teacher, and internet. I am in China and the choices I have are Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Acer, Benq, HP, TCL, and Samsung. Can you recommend any?
Thank you

HI I am a student at Ohio University and a major gaming fan I recently bought a HP Pavilion zv6130us laptop and I love it. It has all the power you can ask for and it will even play many of the new games out today such as F.E.A.R. It has a dvd ripper, 80 gig hd, 512 RAM, 15.4" wide screen and I highly recommend this to anyone that wants power in a portable pc. The only problem is that the battery only lasts about 1-1.75 hours depending on what you are doing.

It all depends on the graphics card for gaming...

What are the specs of good graphics cards that allow you to play those really high tech games with ease? Does the 'video memory' or whatever it is in the laptop influence what you can play or how well it is played, also, does it matter if it is 'shared?'
thanks

Absolutely, 256mb of non-shared memory for a video card is excellent and normally the standard for gaming. They make 512mb and 1gb memory cards as well, but many games do not utilize so much memory and it really wouldn't make a difference (plus the price difference is massive).

Look at Nvidia and ATI for graphics cards.

Do you have a PCI express slot? If so, the absolute fastest right now is the ATI X1900XT and the Nvidia EVGA 7900GTX.

If you have a AGP8x, the fastest is the Nvidia 7800GS.

Don't try any of the cards mentioned unless you have a processor speed of 3Ghz or above because it would cause a serious bottleneck and not take full advantage of the cards.

Thanks for that, when you say 3Ghz and above, does that include 1.6Ghz and above centrino's? Do you know of any reasonably priced laptops that come with a decent video already in them, and how much would it cost (AUS) for a good graphics card? Thanks

Yes, there are laptops with great video cards in them, my absolute favorite at the moment is the Toshiba P105-S921. It outperforms the old Dell XPS and comes really close to outperforming the new Dell XPS(which is thousands of dollars more than the Toshiba). If it's comparable to the Dell XPS, then you know it's definitely one of the better if not best laptops out there in my opinion.

With laptops, you can't normally buy a better video card if that's what you're implying...it's too difficult for it to fit in the given parameters of the case as well as find the correct drivers. I would only try it if I knew it would work...
