I'm curious: On a used CDP over 5 years old and never serviced or maintained, should the 'lens' be cleaned, and if so, how? Other than cleaning inputs/controls if needed is there any other routine maintenance generally recommended for CDPs?
I don't really know, I have a JVC XL-Z1050TN which is 16 years old. I am a non-smoker, and the machine is in great shape.
I cleaned the lens recently, non-invasively, using an Allsop CD lens Cleaning CD. Basically a CD with some fine carbon fibre brushes attached to the playing side. Not sure what to conclude, either my lens was clean, or the Allsop is useless.
I could not notice any difference at all!!
I plan to open the lid on my JVC sometime in the near future to make some mods (upgraded clock circuit, plus lots of other stuff). When I do so I will clean the lens, with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton wool bud.
