New HDTV

I am using HDMI to HDMI cable. My HD channels are clear but the regular channels are worse than my old TV which was a 10 year old regular TV with no HD. When I stand about 6-7ft away it is ok but not good and when I am 4-5ft away it gets pretty bad. Can anyone please help?
