I know a guy who is trying to sell me a home theatre system by "Digital Research." It includes 4 speakers a center speaker and a sub. I have never heard of this brand and am a little skeptical. If anyone can give me info about digital research it would be much appreciated.

Hey Nissan dude, if you say 50 bucks for the stuff, then I will paid u @1500 for 10 sets ASAP!!!

When I was approached by these guys, they claimed that the speakers were "studio monitors", not knowing I owned a studio. I told him to come over to my studio, less than a block away, and if his speakers sounded better than my Genelec 1031's, I'd buy every speaker in the van. Somehow, he got lost on the way. Go figure...

I would like to know how to hook up the Digital Research 5.1 Surround Pro Series III . Im only getting sound out of 2 of them at the moment but they sound way good. Please, if someone can help me figure out how to hook these up (especially the passive Sub) to my pioneer 5.1 receiver I would be grateful. Thanks

that is exactly wat he said " come on i need the money, my boss doesnt know these extra inventory" however I am poor enough to offer 160. I am going to test it out and see how the sound quality goes. If anyone wants any they can buy my digital research system. P.S he came in a black esculade and claims that he sold a grand worth already

I met this dude in my apartment parking lot who was selling a digital research 5.1 home theatre system. He showed me a magazine where the same kind of speakers are selling for $2000. I hooked it up to my system and guess what? my laptop speakers give better output. I had to throw him out.He also gave me the same crap about his boss not knowing about the excess inventory. My advice, dont ever buy anything off the back of a truck.

My roommate back in college got bought by this scam. He was so embarrassed that he just gave the damned things to me. This was a few years ago before the 5.1 thing was popular, so these are just two big ol
speakers.
But you know... for free speakers they ain't half bad - I still use them today. They're a bit muddy, and the little adjustment knobs under the speaker grill aren't wired to anything inside, but they're passable. If you payed less than a hundred bucks for a surround system you shouldn't feel too bad. Just don't do it again. Next time, call a friend who's at home with an internet connection first. Or the cops.

Wow, I'm so embarrased, now that I'm reading these comments. I bought two for $250 each. Can you believe that. I was stopped by a guy in a white suburban, at the gas station. He told me he worked for some famous company installing home theatre systems in rich houses, and he had those "left overs" his boss wanted to get rid of. I still cannot believe how stupid I could be. And I cannot believe they manufacture these pieces of shitt, with the $1999 price on it.
The only thing that keeps me up is the fact that that morning I was hung over from the night before (my 21 birthday party). I made myself a pretty shitty present (for 500 bucks). Well, I'll live with it. I hope more people get to read this in advance, but I fell like most people who read this have actually lost some money already.

Phoenix AZ. Dude gave me the same BS about picking up the speakers from a warehouse for his boss, and he got two excess speakers and were trying to sell them. I got burned for 200 bucks.

I forgot the dudes name, but he asked if I could spare twenty bucks for beer money. I said no.

If I ever find these guys again I'm kicking their butts. If anybody else encounters these scammers in AZ get their cell number and post it here.

Hey are you guys deaf? Or did you just post your complaint without bothering to connect them to a reciever? Yes you do have hook them up so you can listen to them, if you had tried this you would not have given them to your nephew for christmas.
We paid 20 bucks for the set we got and frankly I am surprised how good they sound. You guys really short-changed yourselves by jumping on the bandwagon. For those of you who hid them instead of unloading them, get some wire, make sure you strip the sat. ends at least 3/4 of an inch (guess how I know)
hook them together per the drawing, unless it is unclear (not the best wiring diagram I've seen) and if you have any confusion, I would be happy to clarify the connections for you or give 20 bucks for them if you pay the freight. No kidding! These things are not what you are making them out to be!

i was walking to my car in chasewood plaza (in jupiter, florida) and 2 guys in a black SUV stop by me and say hey do you need some speakers. i automatically thought they meant car speakers, so i was like "no im good" then i thought they just meant for free. so i was like, "hey, for free?" so they drive around and he gives me this whole story about how he works for this company that installs speakers and he got excess inventory. he went into a story before about excess inventory on plasma screens and such and how he turned them in and only got $100 from his boss. so now he wants to keep these but he needs money for storage so he wanted to know if i wanted to buy a pair. i kept saying no, not really, i dont need them unless theyre free. they kept asking how much i could do. i was like i really dont have a lot of money and i dont want to lowball you guys or anything. (little did i know they were screwing me over) he shows me this magazine that looks legit with the speakers in them that has them listed for $2000. i say that im a college student and i dont have a lot of money. they keep asking me and finally i say, like $100. so somehow they say to eachother, $100 for each of us that aint bad. i dunno, they had their ways of confusing the hell out of me. i also thought i was getting 2 systems instead of the 1. so i called my dad and he was skeptical too. he shouldve told me to tell the guys to go screw themselves but he didnt. he said it was my money if i lose anything off of it. he says that theyre located in kendall, miami and that theyve installed stuff for celine dion before. i was like "oh really? cool. my girlfriend lives in kendall" im a retard for thinking it was legit cause he threw out a place i knew about. i threw down $300 for these things. and since i was in such a rush i left my atm card in the atm. (because they were in a rush; he even said he had gotten a call from his boss when i came back from the atm). i put the speakers in my car, they drove off, i drove off. i realized i left my atm card and hauled back to the bank. the card was gone and the bank didnt have it either. luckily i cancelled the card before any more damage was done. and now i just figured out all this is a scam. boy am i an idiot. guess ill try and sell it on ebay. anyone know if its illegal to sell them on ebay? or if its just a crappy brand.

Oh geez, I'm glad to have found this site (I guess) before I tried to sell these things on ebay... my mom and I were walking into Waldbaums and same deal, this guy stopped us, sold it to us out of the back of a truck, excess inventory. Told us that he was on his way to Loews, the movies theater to sell them there - they're movie theater speakers. My mom's not a stupid woman, I am, and she was about to walk away about twenty times but I talked her into it. Meanwhile we're broke as fck and she spent 200 bucks on the thing, and I feel so bad. I was like, "c'mon, they're worth 2000 bucks (it says on the box, $1,999), we can fckin turn around and sell them and make money!" Now I feel really bad she wasted her money, we realized it was a scam almost immediately after we got home. We didn't open them yet, because we were going to sell them, but I'm glad to know they probably at least WORK, even if they're shitty. I figured they wouldn't work at all. I mean I could possibly sell shitty speakers for 200 bucks, just so we can break even, I feel so stupid! Definitely taught me a lesson though, I knew I was naive but now I've been proven it. But to the people that've used them, I hear mixed messages, some say they're halfway decent just not great, you think I could sell them to someone for 200 bucks, or even 100? Not to rip anybody off, but you think they're worth that?

But I guess everybody's speakers are different, I gotta open them up for myself. Ah, thanks anyway, everybody up here.

I got these same piece of crap digital research speakers. i work on the northside of indianapolis, and i was going on my lunchbreak when i recognized a guy that i graduated with. he said the same old crap that everyone here is saying, like that they got an extra one from the warehouse and that they had to get rid of it before there boss saw it or he would take it. i can't believe that i fell for it. the biggest reason was that i knew the guy and another guy i worked with even said he had bought something from them before. anyways i ended up paying $230 for it and i got ripped. the reason i am posting this is though is that the idiot that sold them to me gave me his cell phone number and it's legit. I verified it because i work at the cell phone company that he has a cell phone with. his name is tom pollard and his number is 317-362-2735. I want everyone who got ripped to call this guy and leave messages on his voicemail. i am going to try and find him and get my money back, but even if he gives it back to me i hope everyone gives him hell for selling these things.

I live in B.C. I got approtched by two guys in a van aswell and I thought I was getting a great deal. I thought the stuff was really good and that it was just stolen merchandise. I bought the TR 1110 and the surround sound TR 5210. The thing is I went to my friends and hooked up the two towers because he has a proper reciver and amp. And they sounded excellent, they kept up with his speakers and he has sony vega's. However I don't have the proper stuff to hook up the TR 5210. If anyone out there has the TR 5210 let me know how they sound.

This is for SANK in Phoenix. I saw the same guys in Mesa today, said the exact same thing, asked for $20 for beer money and everything. I also got burned $200 bucks, for a couple of towers. The guy said his name was Aaron. Tall guy, he was driving with a latino friend in an old compact pickup. I took his phone number down, he seemed honest enough... until I called the number and no one knew anyone by the name of Aaron. Stupid F-er. That's when I found this forum. I guess we both got screwed. I'm going to call up some radio stations to see if they'll call out a warning or something.

To anyone who's wondering how they sound: I HOOKED UP THE SPEAKERS to my Aiwa surround system. TERRIBLE!!! I turned up the volume of my receiver full blast, and they didn't make any kind of impressive display at all! Now, the DESCRIPTION says they're 10-400 watts, 92 dB... that is a blatant LIE!!! My $100 Altec Lansing 2.1 system for my PC COMPUTER sounds TEN times better than these P.O.S. "Digital Research DR-2810" towers! Dead serious. I am ashamed to mention the price I paid for these things. I e-mailed them with my complaint, I let you know if I get a reply. Their website is http://www.ptswoofers.com
ALSO: Look out for a brand named AUDIOLINE. I'm not sure if it's the same company that sells them, but it's the same scam.

Well, one of my wife's friends, her husband, got taken at a Martin's in Martinsburg WV. Guy in a van, WV plates, told the whole story, showed the mag article, got this woman's husband for $650. For a "DA5.1" set of speakers and another pair of "Theater Logic T2450L" speakers.

This woman's husband got a web site address, www.ptswoofers.com, where they list these speakers, and show a price of $1999. And this guy supposedly worked out of a company in Newport News, VA. My question is are these just bad knockoffs of an existing speaker, or total fabrication crap all the way.

I saw the same scam happen at the same store though months ago when I was grocery shopping (two guys loading stereo equipment from one van to another) but didn't think anything of it at the time, other than it was odd looking.

Now I understand why so many travel in pairs. Better chances of staying alive. Because around here, we get a hold of this guy again...

WHY????

WHY????

WHY???

SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY WHEN YOU SEE A TOTAL STRANGER PULL UP TO YOU(IN A GAS STATION OR GROCERY STORE)AND ALL OF A SUDDEN TRY TO SELL YOU SPEAKERS(out of the back of their automobile)THAT THEY SAY IS WORTH 2000 FOR 100, 150,200 AND YOU BUY THEM THINKING YOU HAVE A GOOD DEAL???

Good Lord,
PT Barnum was correct when he said "There was a sucker born every minute". On top of that you bi*** about it on a website that has similar people bit**** about it EVERY single week!!!!

How about this I have some speakers called Idiot Acoustics that are worth $50,000.00. See,I have this real looking piece of paper that says so. I have too many so I will sell them to you for $100.00. Someone please buy them from me so you can create a new thread about them instead of freaking TR!!!!

How about this for anyone who has not met a salesman (IN A CAR FOR GODS SAKE) and thinks that these speakers are really worth 2 grand but you can get them for just 100. "THEY ARE CRAP" Save yourself some money, go to Walmart and buy yourself a COBY surround sound speaker package.

On the other hand, I do also have the top of the line COBY that I will sell for 200.00. See I bought too many. On this paper I can show you that they list for 1750.00!!

IDIOTS..............
jeeeessshhh...........

Wait until they start buying the streem stuff on ebay. Good lord my head may explode..........

I encountered this whole speel in Greenville, NC. It was two dudes in a greenish blue old lookin van. They used the whole boss and magazine thing on me and wanted me to pay 2000 for two speakers since they were worth "1600 each". Anways, these guys sure can't be embarressed. I knew something was shady and boy did I announce to the whole world that these dudes needed to leave me alone. 5 min later they came back around. I said I'd give them 100 bucks for both speakers, done. They took it. Well I hate to admit that these things sound pretty good. We hooked them up to our other surround sound and it doesn't sound too shabby, you just have to know how to hook them up right. 100 bucks wasn't too bad for these things, but I wouldn't pay any more than that. Maybe I didn't get hit as hard as some of you. But for anyone around Greenville, DON'T GIVE THEM ANYTHING OVER 100! The other thing people is that when you get new speakers you can't blast them right away, kinda have to let them warm up, otherwise you will ruin them and get this crackly noise outa them forever, kinda like a car, be gentle the first 500 miles. Some of you probably ruined your speakers right out because you blasted them as soon as you hooked them up.

I saw some people get approached in a grocery store parking lot in Vegas on Friday, Feb 4. I walked up while the guy was giving the standard "overstock" sales pitch and told the people that it was a scam and that the speakers were garbage. I think they were branded as Digital Research.

The scammers were driving a black Landcruiser SUV, with a Las Vegas Cenennial License plate: LV955F

I got hit with the same scam. Don't know why I was foolish enough to go for it. I plugged them up and they all sound alright. Not top of the line but probably just as good as Tandy or Emerson. Oh well, Guess you learn the hard way. Exact same same story as everyone else. Thats 200 bucks I could have used elswhere.

Bought a pair of Dogg Digital in a Best Buy parking lot about 5 years ago in West Palm Beach, FL... Don't remember how much I paid, but I think it was in the $200 range. I still use them to this day. When I'm listening to music I use my Harmon's, but when I have a big party and lots of people are over, I use the Dogg Digitals. They are bass heavy and loud as all hell. Perfect for parties. I know it was a scam, but the years of use I've gotten out of it has made it worth it.

Hey, you guys are lucky. My husband paid $600 for his "Digital Professional Speaker System". After reading all this, he's feeling pretty sick. Wish there was some way we could get the word out.

I sell speakers on the street. Theater Research, DPA and Sony. Ive been doing it for about five years now. I am what the speaker companies would refer to as an "indie". Im an independent, self employed speakerman. Please hear me out before you throw stones.
Most salesmen only know how to do things one way. The way they were taught. Thats where most speakerguys get stuck. I was there at one time. I worked with a "white van" company for my first two years in the biz. For us, street tactics such as "the flip", "good cop, bad cop", "sense of loss" and "power slam", were just normal ways of doing business. We would use all the old lines. I was one of the craftier guys on our team, an ellaborate storyteller.
All this crap worked. Any given week we could sell up to 30 sets per van using these methods. Then straight to the bars we would go. Booze, pot, coke, whatever. It was mayhem. Inside, my guts were rotting. I hated the way I was living. I hated who I was becoming. I knew that I was doing everything the wrong way.
After two and a half years it was time to call it quits. I packed my bags, said fairwell to my friends and left Los Angeles alltogether.
I found myself back at Moms house, of course. Talk about healing! I love mom. But get this, the best thing that came out of all this was spiritual healing. I invited the Lord Jesus back into my life! I repented of the way I had been living. I was willing to change, so I asked Him to change me. What a process!
Nowadays, Im back on the street selling speakers (Idaho. Green Toyota Tacoma). My pitch is different, Honest, and I have nothing to hide. These are the facts: I get a good deal because i buy so many. My overhead is low because I dont have a storefront lease. I dont have employees to pay and I dont have any advertising expenses. I dont stretch it any further than that. You get a deal because I get a deal! Im happy to sell a set for $200 whereas before I was never satisfied!
There is more to this story. If you have any questions or need any product please feel free to reach me. And sorry to those who are pissed.

Thanks for the story "White Van" but heres the deal... I say, everyone who got boned for 200 dollars or more should all get together (including myself) and hunt these fukkers down and drain their bank accounts. Yes, I know, I'm not very smart for buying this crap but these pieces of shite need to get robbed, just like we did. Next time I see that van (got that plate) I'm gonna make sure it ends up off of a cliff.

yep, the white van that was in Las Vegas had California plates 6s07033. It's kind of surprising if you google "6S07033 California"
these As*holes are everywhere.

My husband came home today with THE SPEAKERS!!! These guys hit him up on a rural road corner in Western Wisconsin today (2/23/2005)They gave the crap line that their boss didn't know they got 3 systems "accidently' when they went to the warehouse to pick up ONE set for installation at a "rich dentist's house up the road aways". The same line I've read in the earlier posts here just now. Luckily, I guess, he ONLY got screwed over for $200. Should we stop payment on the check? Call the cops/ What to do to stop these idiots.

They were in London Ontario Canada on thursday and I too a guy that would never do anything stupid like this but of course did end up doing it for $400. The guy gave me a name though I'm sure probably fake but I'm looking into it. Timothy Munoz from Cambridge I got a quick glimpse of his drivers ID. This guy was driving a beige Astro van. Didn't get plates though. Lets get these F*@ckers.

Unfortunately my husband just bought a digital research system two days ago in SAN DIEGO, CA area. I knew there had to be a gimmick because the price was cheap, so I researched it on the internet and found this site. Now I know why the guy told him not to sell it on e-bay. I plan to alert the BBB about this scam.

LISTEN UP!!
Unregistered guest
LISTEN UP!! Everyone who thinks they can stop a scam like this by simply getting licence plate numbers and ID-ing the "salesmen" is an idiot. REPORT THE COMPANY they work for to your state's Attorney General's Office, or to an organization like the Better Business Bureau. They have the power to shut down the whole corporation, taking all their salesmen with them. The more complaints that are posted about them, the easier it will be for the decision to be made to put them out of business.

Same Story... But I didn't buy them less than 2 hrs. ago. A guy in a white SUV in irwindale, California came up to me with all the same claims. I called my friend on my cell phone and asked him to look up "DIGITAL RESEARCH". First thing that came up was this site with all the postings saying "SCAM" not worth 50 bucks. I told him not today buddy. He said who are you going to trust... Your friends or yourself. I told him to F*ck off

I forgot to post this in my last post... This guy gave me his name and cell number Chris (626)391-4908 and he gave me his bosses work number in San Dimas (909)394-7405. Let's try to at least bug them a little.
