New member Username: ZigbooBrooklin, ON Canada Post Number: 1 Registered: Dec-05 | Hi folks, Wondering if anyone could give me some advice on which of two receivers are a better choice. I'm looking at either the Marantz SR7400 ($580 CAD) or the Yamaha HTR5890 ($700 CAD). My use will be a mix between home theatre and music, with the home theatre being the more common. However, I do have 700 CDs, so I do like my music. They'll be couple with a Hitachi 46" TV. The room is small, but odd shaped- 11' wide by 20' long, with the couch and TV across from each other the short way. Planning on buying some speakers too, but thinking of getting a small Bose, Mission or Athena "theatre in a box set" to use for the home theatre set-up, and using my existing pair of towers for music/stereo. I'm pretty new to this, and after 3 days of studying, I can't figure out which receiver is better quality, better for my use or a better deal. From what I can figure out, I'm thinking the Yamaha has more options, but the Marantz is better quality, but then I'm admittedly ignorant, so thought I'd ask the experts... Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian |

I would definitely cross Bose off your list, in any case. However, esp. for predominantly HT use, look into this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009E1YPM/002-1299225-8744028?v=glance&n=17228 2&n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance And read more about it here: https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-audio/160136.html http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/showthread.php?t=1251&page=1&p p=10 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=530504 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=417894 A few caveats---very minor IMHO at this pricepoint: no pre-outs (would negate the whole point of a digital amp after all), subwoofer crossover only down to 80Hz, no room speaker EQ, primitive remote, no digital outputs, no OSD (onscreen display). Also may not be the best choice if you have lousy, overly bright speakers. Just as some folks still prefer LPs to CDs and tubes to solid state, you might decide to stick with an analog receiver, I'll make no guarantees. But it's definitely worth hearing it to make up your own mind, in any case...it's a whole different animal! |
some guy..danm anon Unregistered guest | If your going to get the Yamaha get the RXV1500. Same as Yamaha HTR5890, but looks better. Plus 2001Audio Video is selling for $599C for boxing week. $100 less then Future Shop boxing week sale. I also think they are doing a final cleance on Marantz... so you sould be able to get a lower plice then listed on the Marantz 7400. Yamaha and Marantz = in build quality marantz 'warmer' sound than Yamaha so it depends on how it sound with the speakers will get. Off the top of my head i think i have seen Canadian ads for the Panasonic for around $300C. From my reading here.. most HERE don't like it. I didn't hate it. But didn't spend much time with it. Plus it wasn't matched with an proper (very 'warm') speakers. I think craig's list toronto has a used Harman Kardon 635 for $800C (IMO best choice) |
