I built a new house and had it completely prewired in order to be able to manage music distribution throughout the whole house from the media room. However, besides the media room, I want speakers to be unobtrusive, which is why I had wiring for a subwoofer installed in the living room (in order to be able to crank up the volume for parties without having to install massive speakers). Now I have noticed that there is only one wire running from the media room (where the amp is) to the outlet where the subwoofer is supposed to come in the living room. I know it is possible to connect a subwoofer with one wire, but how do I connect this wire at the other end, id est to the amp? Do I need an external crossover? I would really appreciate any help that can be provided in this respect.
What type of cable is installed at this location? Speaker cable? Interconnect cable? RG-6? Is there a termination on the cable? RCA jack? Binding posts?
Whether you need an external X-over will be determined by whatever subwoofer you purchase. For the most part low frequencies are mixed as mono signals so a feed from one channel will normally suffice. However, as the resolution of the storage media improves with digital formats, more bass frequencies are becoming stereo and even with a DVD format set to discrete 5.1 output there are signals beneath the 80 Hz Xo that might be lost with just a one channel hook up. Whether your receiver/processor has one or two channel LFE output will determine what you should have running to this outlet.
If this is a new home where you OK'd the wiring, then you may have to live with what you have or pay to have it corrected. If the wiring was decided on by someone else without your input, I would contact them and find out why they decided to run just one speaker cable. I would, depending on the sub you choose and the processor you own, get them to run either another speaker level cable or replace the speaker cable with a (double) run of low capacitance interconnect.
I am not happy with the way DSTV or Multchoice treat us, especially when it comes to SABC and ETV. You always have to look for and pay for dish keys when these tv stations are blocked. Can someone help me on the keys for these stations and any other which are known. I am currently using strong 3700 reciever but updated for irdeto, seca and nagravision channels. Thanks
my amp will not accept my subwoofer so my ex added another smaller amp and it worked fine but I moved and had to disconnect so now do not know how to wire it back. Ex is no longer around to help me thanks

Hi There! Brand new to this game so bear with me please. Just bought an Onkyo 8511 stereso receiver runnin two older Bose 301s.Sounds ok but want to hook up a decent powered sub woofer. No sub out on the Onkyo. Question is can I hook up a sub and how?? Elementry question perhaps but I don't want to blow a channel on the new Onkyo. Thanks in advance for your help. Kelly
