Shelf systems are crap in general, especially famous for comically exaggerating their power ratings. If it claims 170watts rms you might be lucky to get maybe 60w rms from it on a good day, and even then those will probably be a thin and distorted 60w. 3. Save some money to buy yourself a decent self-powered sub, even the $145 (shipped) Dayton 12" from partsexpress.com would wipe the floor with what you have right now. 4. Save more money to buy a decent home component system, as little as $400 would get you light years better performance than any shelf/compact system. |

Car audio does NOT in general suck. Only stock stuff in many, but not all cars. The car custom audio install world is more than alive and well while many speaker braands for home audio are going under. Subs in cars are EXTREMELY powerful- or at least many, and todays kids are outting a bunch of them in trunks-- too much bass for me! In addition, Sony makes some decent head units for cars. I believe the problem you may be having is that you need to check your receiver and see if it has a subwoofer signal out put line. In addition, you would probably benefit from a powered sub, instead of what sounds like a passive sub. Importantly, what kind of receiver are you using? |

And if i got a powered sub id hook it to my RCA 5.1 surround sound system the only reason i am still using my shelf system is to power the sub for some bass. I am not looking for real good sound quality or high end components just something for some decent base for cheap So what if i hook this to my sony sub? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-804 |

When you say that car audio subs are "EXTREMELY powerful" I think you are referring to car subs you've heard being powered by extremely powerful sub-amps. Not easy to find a 1000watt sub amp for the home environment though. As for Sony HUs if you browse car audio forums they are held in about the same low esteem as Bose is in home audio forums. Lots of reliability problems apparently, too. Kenwood is the other favorite punching bag. |

Plus how do you know the Sony sub would be up to it? What I've read about Sony subs would make me worry a bit on that question... |

Finally, a subwoofer that I would buy for my car that is sanely priced and sounds great for all music! Before, the only ones that I liked were from Morel, and were very expensive |
