Connecting combo vcr/dvd to new tv - are there 2 ways

i have a new sony projection tv and a few year old panasonic combo dvd/vcr player. i programmed the tv as per sony's intructions for the combo panasonic player (there was a code in the sony set up book for all panasonic combo units). the remote control doesn't work the combo unit. i have the panasonic unit connected to the tv as seperate vcr and dvd(seperate outputs to the tv) for maximum picture quality. should i have set the programing for the vcr/dvd as seperate dvd and vcr instead of combo? the reason i didn't try is there are lot'sof codes for this. thanks for any help!
