Difference in amps to power subs

Ok, so honestly. When it all comes down to it what is the difference in these things. Like most people say, the distortion is never an issue on these amps. Now, I am not going to compare a Pyramid with an Orion but if say, for example you run a 1200rms Orion vs. the Kicker 1200.1 what would be the audible difference between the 2? I realize that the difference might be heard if you were powering speakers with it, but with subwoofers could you TRULY tell the difference?

Personally, I don't really think so, but never really compared.
I guess the THD numbers might give you an idea.

i would say damping has a little more to do with SQ than how much less of a fraction of a percent you can get your THD.:-)

i wasn't arguing with you, just adding to the cause.

i read somewhere that up to 10% THD is inaudible in a car environment(road and engine noise). but i could be wrong.

Lol, I didn't think you were... but it wouldn't supprise me if thats true.
I could see how you might be able to tell on tweeters or speakers... but on subs, I find it harder to believe an amp can make an sq difference.
I'm prob showing some of my lack of knologe about amps by saying that.

Well, you were right.
THD has a little part in it, but not that much over all.

damping factor plays a much bigger role than THD + noise. It directly effects sound quality bc it reflects how much control the amp has over the driver.

actually, damping factor is very overrated. if the number is over 30, you won't tell a difference. thd, s/n, power supply, all very important.
thread for thought i dug up as a muzzle on another thread. http://caraudiomag.com/specialfeatures/0111cae_anatomy/

according to this site (http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t3103.html) dampening factors can get over the couple hundreds. My kicker 450.2 is rated at 250 or so according to them. That ain't bad.

yeah. the average is 100-200. but that's the thing. so long as it's above 30, you are not likely to notice a difference.

he's right, it states that on bcae1.

but i would rather have a damping factor of 200 and a thd of 1% than a damp of 30 and a THD of .0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001%.:-O lol

Lol... was all that needed?:-) So is a THD rating of 1% better or worse than THD of 0.05%... because I've always thought the lower the number... the less distortion.

yes, the lower the number the less distortion, but did you read that link i posted?

here, i'll show ya.

"Many people believe that THD below 1% is not audible and I believe they're probably correct. The fact is, especially in an automobile, the amplifier is the least of your worries. Speakers used for mids and highs commonly produce between 1% an 5% THD and for subwoofers the numbers can easily reach 10%. This doesn't even take into account all of the resonances of all of the plastic and metal panels in the vehicle."

understand?

there are so many other noises in a car, that a THD of 1% or lower really isn't an issue.

unless you listen to your music in the middle of a field, with the windows up and just the battery powering everything. lol

Actually, I do.
You may not be able to tell a difference from just 1%, but when looking for a good amp, you would want the one with the lowest THD, and the highest dampening factor right?
