Need suggestions for an inexpensive home theater system

I am a novice with home theaters and need some help. I am looking for a decent system (hopefully w/dvd and stereo tuner)for under $300. I also want one that has the capability of having all of the speakers on in all modes not just the dvd. On the units that I have checked out, only the left and right front speakers operate when the tv or stereo is on. I have been told that some systems can be switched into a concert hall type mode which powers all of the speakers. I have also been told that this is not real surround sound, but I would think that this is still better than having the rear speakers silent or hissing when watching tv. The Magnavox MRO20037 is one unit that I was considering but I don't know how the speakers operate. Any suggestions/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Panasonic SC-DT300 is a good low cost system.

So is the HTB-205 by Kenwood. Buy the DVD separate or you cannot upgrade later on.
