Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 261 Registered: Sep-04 | Wow! after reading all these threads and doing my searching over the past few weeks, I just plain need help here lol OK, I have asked before, and I got some good info, but I don't want to make a big $ mistake either. I have a 90 caddy, and my sub box has to go in the trunk. I am thinking I want to go for SQL, I need to be heard!!! After several attemps on subs, I'm not getting there, and then I read where alot of people are using (1) sub, and I'm using 2 12's.. What is better, (1) good sub? what size? or 2 or more not as good? Don't know if that makes any sense, but can I be heard, I mean HEARD with only (1) sub in the trunk, and what would that sub be and size. And can someone give some brands, and boxes or box for it, or them to go in. I'm not rich, but lets say I'm just looking. Thanks! |

The greater the volume of air you can move with your speakers, the louder it will be. To get volume, you need to things: cone surface area and excursion. Excursion refers to how far in or out the cone can move when electrical current is passed though its voice coils. So, to recap, if you get a sub with more surface area (a 15" or 18") it will be a lot easier to move more air. Your other option is to get subwoofers with greater excursion, or you can just get more subs. Boxes are also an important consideration. Certain ported box designs can make a 6.5" speaker sound as loud as a 12" speaker. Whether you decide to go with more subs, bigger subs, or subs with greater excursion, its important to remember you'll need more power. |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 263 Registered: Sep-04 | Whats confusing is what to go with! I have 2 12" PPI subs in there now, and in a pre-fab ported box. The problem around my area is there is no real audio shop close by, and most of my things are purchased online. Can you or someone recommend some set-ups that might work well in a trunk! Thanks |

Gold Member Username: Taylor17Kopperl, Texas Post Number: 2674 Registered: Jan-05 | SQl? I need some kind of price range. I can give some suggestions on $100 subs, or $1000 sub. Same with amps. As you prob already know, like with most things, you get what you pay for. |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 265 Registered: Sep-04 | SQ and SPL, well depending on whats out there, or whether I can go with 1 sub, say 4-500 on the subs, and the amp I can take care of!!! Just let me know that I can go to 1 ohm! Thanks for all your guys help! |
Gold Member Username: Taylor17Kopperl, Texas Post Number: 2676 Registered: Jan-05 | Sounds like a good job for the RE x.x.x I think the 12 is around $420, and its 1600 watts rms, so you'll need a pretty big amp. It should do the job though. A good cheaper amp would be the MTX 1501D |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 267 Registered: Sep-04 | Where can you get a RE? And thanks btw |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 268 Registered: Sep-04 | Would you be talking about something like this?? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem%26item%3D5792038543&category=18804 %26%26 |
Bronze Member Username: LegacyaudioPost Number: 70 Registered: Feb-05 | lol no go to reaudio.com then go to their contact-- you will want to buy the RE 12 X.X.x just call the number and their people will get everything handled---DONT BUY THAT SUB-- taylor said 420$ not 120$ |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 270 Registered: Sep-04 | LOL, no I wasn't going to, just haven't heard of RE to much, ok will do that. Any idea what kind of box I would need for 1 12" this is going in the trunk of a caddy, so it's going to have to pound, I have 2 12" right now that don't do sh!t~ |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 272 Registered: Sep-04 | Anyone know what enclosure would be good for a 12" RE? |
Gold Member Username: Taylor17Kopperl, Texas Post Number: 2679 Registered: Jan-05 | The link didn't work for me, but if its $120, I'd be willing to bet its not the same thing. The 12 is $405, and there is a $25 charge to change the voice coils to quad, or any other configuration. As far as the box, if you really want this sub to move a sh1t load of air, go ported, and tune 28/30HZ. www.reaudio.com These are the subs Glass uses if that gives you any confidence.:-) |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 275 Registered: Sep-04 | Forget that link, that was something else LOL. Ok, Thanks for this link, do you think though that one of these 12's can outdue 2 12's? I have those PPI DCX 12's! Also I am sooooo new to boxes, can you find these made already, or do you have to build them. Thanks I appreciate it. |
Silver Member Username: 54danny54Post Number: 741 Registered: Nov-04 | jack...u willin 2 sell 1 of ya ppi's out of box? |
Silver Member Username: ScubasteveAnnapolis, MD Post Number: 263 Registered: May-05 | no, that link is not something else. Thats RE equiptment, the sellers call it an HC, but I believe is an SE, unless they made a model called the "HC" that I'm not aware of. $120 is not the price for it, its just the current bid. I'm not saying you should but it off ebay, but thats an RE. |
Gold Member Username: Taylor17Kopperl, Texas Post Number: 2684 Registered: Jan-05 | I'nm not sure if you can buy a ported box off the net, building one would be the best way. Unless you want to buy an SS box? I think there pretty expencive, but suposed to make you're sub sound really good. |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 276 Registered: Sep-04 | Compluva, you can have them both for $175+ shipping, I don't have the original boxes anymore, but I don't need just one. Scuba, yea I meant that, I knew it was a RE, just not a xxx, I don't know how I got that fixed up. Taylor, What is a SS box? |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 279 Registered: Sep-04 | bump |
Silver Member Username: ScubasteveAnnapolis, MD Post Number: 269 Registered: May-05 | Jack, I believe he's talking about an enclosure design known as a "snail shell" such as those sold by http://www.powered4sound.com/ You might want to give them a call if your not up to building a box yourself, their results are pretty impressive from what I've seen on their website and from what people say. They'll build a box for any sub. |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 280 Registered: Sep-04 | Scuba, oh ok, seen someone talk about one of those in another thread. Thanks for the info, I will do that, call and get a price list. I never built one before, and don't have the proper tools to do it with. Appreciate your time. Compluva, did you see what I posted?? |
Silver Member Username: JaackdethUnited States Post Number: 283 Registered: Sep-04 | Just got a look at that enclosure, they want 400 for that. Any other ideas? |
Silver Member Username: ScubasteveAnnapolis, MD Post Number: 272 Registered: May-05 | damn, thats a bit pricey. The sub is a XXX right? I could build you a ported box to the RE specs if you wanted but it would be pretty pricey to ship, I've never shipped one of my boxes before. Also, I'm about to go on vacation then back to college so I don't know if i'll have enough time. Where do you live though? |
