Here is my deal:

The current setup in my car consists of the following:
Pioneer DEH-P9600MP
Infinity Kappas
JL 500/1 amp
JL 10w6v2 sub

Now I am perfectly happy with my system as it is now, but I am getting a new car, and it has been agreed that my younger brother who is getting my current car as a hand me down, gets the current system that is in it (lucky jerk doesn't have to pay a cent). Now for my new car, I would obviously like to at least maintain the quality of my current system, if not upgrade it.

A friend of mine has offered to sell me 2 8w7's with an enclosure for $400 (a steal i think). Now here are my questions:

Will I be able to get away with powering 2 8w7's with 1 JL 500/1 amp? The JL website suggests a 250/1 for 1 8w7, but I imagine the numbers might now work for the 500/1 powering 2 subs.

If I do use this new setup, 1 500/1, 2 8w7's, will there be a significant drop off in the low frequency sounds? I have a friend with 1 8w7 and a 250/1, and I like the way it sounds, just maybe a bit too subtle at some points. Keep in mind that I like tighter bass as opposed to the sloppier kind, and I don't listen to much rap at all, mostly heavy metal (double bass drums), classic rock, etc. I am *hoping* that the 2 8's can do the job.

If the answer to either of these questions is that the sound will be inferior to my current setup, do I opt for 2 8w7's and shell the extra $ for a 1000/1, or do i go for a 10w7 or 12w7 with a 500/1 (enough power?).

Keep in mind that I'm still a student, and on a limited budget. My goal here is to get the best I can, but this is nearing the limit of my price range. I have read some great posts on these forums, and most people seem pretty knowledgeable, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

well since you like tight bass as oppsed to loud bass from rap those 8s will give you a tight response..if the website suggest a 250/1 for one 8w7 then 2 8w7s with a 500/1 wil work fine and i saw on their website that using the 1000/1 on those 8s would be pushing thme into critical zone...those 8w7s should sound around the same as the 10w6 except they probably wont get as deep but theyll have a faster response

The 500/1 will work perfect for the 2 8's. You shouldn't notice a hole lot of difference... maybe just in the low frequencies.
In my opinion though... I'd rather have 1 10w7.

hi matt. a friend of mine was considering the exact same set up running 250watts to each of his three 8w7's (until i convinced him to run with rL-i's).
with your two, i would certainly use the 500/1 for both 8's over one ten. although i am a fan of running rms+50%, 250watts will be fine for each. not to mention the amps are underated in power (but then, so are the subs).
that's my personal take

yea if i were you i would get the 8w7s, resell them for more(can be done) and get like 2 10w7s with a 1000/1 or a 12w7 and a 1000/1

but you also dont have to stay with jl, if you can tell us a duget we can help you

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. My budget for just the amp and sub (no box, wires, installation) is around $700. I originally paid about $600 for my 10w6v2 and 500/1 from eBay. I'll take some suggestions...

The thing is I'm happy with my 10w6v2 right now, and I was just figuring that the 2 8w7's would be an upgrade, and since I'm getting a deal it would be a better idea than re-getting the 10w6v2 w/ 500/1 (pretty much the same price). Are you guys saying that 2 8w7's won't be any/much better than what I have now?

thing is you'll get sq and high excursion with the w7's (w/considerably more surface area).
given your budget, i would consider 2 sound splinter rl-i 10's for 280.00.
i would couple it w/my favorite ED Nine.1 at 1ohm for 350.00.
that's 630.00 w/enough left for the box. there are other options for the subs and the amp, but if i strayed from the jl's (which i am highly proned to do), this would be my route for 700.00 w/10" subs (i prefer 12's).
