Looking for subwoover recomendations

New member Username: GlitchGrand Rapids, Mi Post Number: 1 Registered: Jun-05 | Okay well two questions that have likely been asked many times before. First... do you recomend one or two subs? I know that some music has bass in stereo or our of phase left vs. right channel. As in some of the NIN tracks and Beastie boys. The next is what would you recomend for a moderately price subwoofer offering some all aroudn flexability? I listen to classical and acoustic, and quiet a bit of electronic and industrial. no this doesn't mean that most of my music runs sinewaves or single note burps to turn heads while I drive down the road. I do like a bit of the rap filled with low tones but i'm more interested in being able to hear tonal differances and shifts than shaking my fillings out. What would you recomend in the $150~250ish range? right now i'm considering MB quarts Pwe 304, just based on the reviews i've read... naturally i'll listen before I buy, or the infinity perfect line of subs. Thanks. |

Silver Member Username: JbaileyIndianapolis, Indiana Post Number: 131 Registered: Mar-05 | Hey Sean, I actually have an ID Max 12 in a slot port box that frigin' pounds and I'm only running about 400 watts RMS to it. As Jonathan has said before (and it makes sense if you think about it), I would only gain about 3db by powering it with 800 watts RMS (a doubling of power provides roughly 3db increase in output), so I'm not far off from full output even running only 400 watts. |

Silver Member Username: CheapskatePost Number: 168 Registered: Mar-04 | other brands that have gotten favorable response from whay i've seen are: adire precision power digital designs elemental designs audiomobile (for SPL) Diamond Audio MB Quart, The Blueprint (one mention i think) and recently... dub. of course you've had to have heard of jl audio by now too. as to stereo bass... it doesn't happen. as far as i know, most subs are crossed over below 100Hz. sound is non-directional until 150Hz. if those tracks have any streo information... it will be in the mid-bass region. the benefit of using more woofers is that you'll move more air for a stronger gut massage. |

Silver Member Username: CheapskatePost Number: 177 Registered: Mar-04 | why need 12 cars? you could do trial and error in your own car as long as you don't mind buying extra woofers and boxes. if you just get a decent woofer or two, a decent amp and a nice solid box... you should be okay unless you're looking to win competitions. a decent setup will more likely than not sound better than MOST people's home systems. i personally get more than enough bass for my tastes with my $40 12" woofer in a reenforced box with acoustic foam lining. i didn't shop around or measure thiele small parameters... i just stuffed the woofer in a non resonant box and it works fine. i'm driving it with a crappy old 1970s reciever, but know i could get even tighter bass if i got my NAD reciever that blew when my sub wires shorted working again. a good amp that can take control of a woofer is a god investment. yes.. you can get improvements with careful setup and measurements etc... but bottom line... bass is the range where humans have the hardest time hearing distortions. i totally believe the ecoustics user who claims that his 3 cheap woofers in a sealed prefab box give him excellent sound. just don't buy junk and don't install it half axed. if you audition a woofer or amp that sounds good in a store and properly install it... you should get decent sound. tweaking will only give you a 5-10% improvement after that. 3 of any woofer will sound just like one... only a little louder. actually... too many woofers all over the place might induce phase cancellations and sound worse. |
