wondering if anyone has had issues with the low end on their DD's. i know a number of people complain that they are inadequate. also, does anyone have a knowledge of their Fs. its not listed on their site.
Linus, Lucy, and Chuck. why, do you know them (goodness..)? i recall you saying the same about audiobahns for goodness sake. so, meanwhile back at the ranch.. "seriously.." one of the individuals complained to DD and after bragging about their build quality and sql characteristics (great subs) DD stated that they build subs to play to the car freq, not the box freq. so i'm wondering if anyone has the same issues or the Fs so that i might delineate a factor in the cause.
In my opinion the 1000 and 2000 series DD's are the best "sounding" woofers they produce. (next to the 9100)
They are extremely efficient yet handle quite a bit more than thier rated limit.
In sealed enclosures I wouldn't say thier any better sounding than a midlevel sub. But in the correct ported enclosure, they will astound you.
Accuarate, deep, smooth, efficient.
A woofer at that price, I can guarantee anyone would be happy with it.
I'm not quite sure who told you they build subs to play the car's resonant frequency but that isnt true. Thier subs are built for accurate low frequency reproduction. Building a box to compliment a particular vehicle is up to the installer.
thanks for the input zac. here is that response from DD:
"thank you for the email. our background is in designing audio systems for many applications, we are not really a car audio company, it is only one market. our main design philosphy is to be "true to the source", to deliver the original source material through the speaker to the user. we do not want to change the source.
to do this, we design for low moving mass, low inductance and proper coil/cone motion control in order to deliver the best transient reponse possible. we then machine the parts to the closest tolerances, hand build them to keep the tolerances as tight as possible, and build them as durable as possible.
this makes a very good sounding speaker, the high efficiency design and strong build quality has attracted many spl guys to use our products with good success, but we did not design them for this purpose. the spl success is a byproduct of a very good design, and careful assembly. much like a fine sports car, a ferrari or porsche, drives wery nice, AND is capable of racing if the user desires.
the 1008 has very good sql, the best we think, available. the box tuning freq reflects the freq a modeling program would calculate for a free field response, the response inside a vehicle is actually in the low 30s. we build the subs to play to the car freq, not the box freq.
if you use a 1.0 cuft box, to our spec, you will have fast, clean, tight and deep bass, capable of very high levles when needed.
ya, he lost me on that last line as well. Tell ya what, I need to call in a new order in the morning so while i'm at it I'll be sure to ask him what he meant by that.
I have the 3512's and I have only 1 on 800 clean watts in my car and I tell ya what that sucka bangs. People are amazed at it they say thats just 1? I say yep. I nick named it DareDevil just soots it ). And as for the lows it has not a problem at all goin low. And clean doing so.
Hi Mike, ...placed an order today with DD. Jes was out to lunch when I spoke with Kim. I will ask him about the 8" next week when the order is confirmed. Sorry, I would've asked kim but she would've laughed at me. She's a diva who only knows prices and availability. ttys
