The pioneer is okay but you can do better for $300 elsewhere (doesn't help you with Best Buy discounts).

Sony are not known for speakers, although I haven't heard these. If you are limited to buying at Best Buy, you'd do better with Klipsch speakers (or maybe Athena or JBL). I hear the Klipsch Sub-12 is pretty good too.

Definitly Klipsch, though I saw the Klipsch Sub-10 subwoofer on sale at Costco for $200 (which I noticed is $400 here). I read in other sites that they keep blowing fuses.

How much of a disount are you getting?

The only good values to be had at Best Buy are the Athena speakers that they're closing out, if they are still available there.

That Pio 814 for $300 is a joke...you can get the top of the line Pio 1014 for the same price on line, shipped and the new 1015 for maybe an extra $50.

Sony speakers are not worth buying at any price, unless you're buying for a teenager's room. If you have to buy speakers at Best Buy, I'd go for Athena first and then (reluctantly) JBL...wouldn't surprise me if your friend's discount will only get you the same price as online though, after you're done paying sales tax.

For instance the lousy POS subwoofer (JBL e150) that I bought new for $160 shipped on eBay goes for $360 at BB...what a freakin' joke!

My suggestion would be to use the BB discount on huge bulky things that would be a pain to buy online, like tube TVs (the only thing Sony still does well), fridges, washing machines, etc.
