The only thing I agree with is the part about setting the gains by ear...I've done it with a meter, a scope, and by ear and I always seem to set the gains at the same place with any method so I would say save your money on the meters & scopes.

I totally disagree that the gain is a volume control...I mean you can use it as one if you're made of money and don't mind replacing fried amps & blown speakers regularly.

In a perfect audio world the manufacturers would make amps that match the HU so there would be no reason for a gain control...

This is why car audio industry needs "standards". That way, a$$ Sony and Pyramid can no longer claim 1000w amps for $50.

So yes it is alright to set gains by ear, but also try not to keep the gain real high so I wont damage the amp and the subs.

You're better off keeping them slightly lower than higher

You are suppose to set the amp gain to match the preamp volts out your HU right!? When can you buy a voltmeter and where do I connect it to see how many volts it doing?
