I am a newbie to this Home Theatre forum and I wish to know the answers for the following questions.
1) What does Dolby/DTS - matrix and Discrete mean?
2) what are the different of these sound format?
Dolby Digital Dolby Digital/ EX DTS Digital Surround DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 DTS Neo:6 Music DTS Neo:6 Cinema
3) Can I play the above sound format decoding DVDs by using the 5 channels av receiver?
4) Can AV receiver with Dolby Digital Matrix 6.1 and DTS Matrix 6.1 system decoder play the Dolby 5.1/DTS DVDs? (DVD player only has Dolby 5.1 and DTS decoder)

Have you seen a DVD recorded with 6.1 or 7.1 sound? These are matrixed formats. You will be playing a source recorded in 5.1.

1)matrix is where the extra channels are mixed into the other sound channels by a usally complex method of manipulating the wavform and discrete means that there are that many channels of sound completly sepereate for the others
2)dolby digital 5.1 descrete channels dolby digital 6.1 descrete channels (one channel behind you) DTS digital surrond 5.1 descrete DTSES matrix is 5.1 to 6.1 conversion dtses desctre is just that 6.1 channels of sound dts neo both of them are for stero to surrond sound conversion like that of dplIIx
