The XBL^2 motor was designed by Adire Audio and patent pending, there are only a few companies (Resonant Engineering, Ascendant Audio, and a few others) that have the rights to use their design. JL uses it's own methods on the W7 driver.

Cross drilled polepiece, which removes heat from the voice coil. It also has a forced air cooling frame, which basically adds a little control to the sub and cools the motor when air moves through the frame. Of course, it also uses a very well designed suspension system to keep things linear as well. Another thing you have to take with a grain of salt, the ID Max is a very good subwoofer and doesn't boast huge technologies, but sounds every bit as good as a W7 or Brahma. It accomplishes it's purpose with a very tight gap and well designed suspension.
