New member Username: ZackallenPost Number: 2 Registered: Sep-04 | In reply to Dr Mel G, I have the 4663 residing in an entertainment cabinet and it is just at or just above eye level depending on the height of whomever is sitting the sofa. From the sofa, which is 12 feet away, the TV is bright and clear. Still OK if you lay on the sofa. I used to like to lay on the floor to watch TV (especially after Thanksgiving dinner) but with this TV the picture is dim, if you do that. From the kitchen, from which in my house you see the TV from about maybe 25 feet further away than the sofa, it's still great - even brighter maybe (I don't mind doing the dishes anymore). I don't think anyone would want to be any nearer to this set than 12 feet. A little more might be better, but company we had over say it's not too big from 12 feet (I was considering returning it for a 34 inch Sony widescreen CRT and they tell me don't do it. This TV is new tech, which is another reason I was considering the CRT. I bought an extended warranty and probably would not have with a CRT. When I was little we had a Muntz - that thing was reliable - once and awhile my Dad's best friend Pete would replace a vacuum tube for us). I am definitely watching too much TV these days. |
New member Username: ZackallenPost Number: 3 Registered: Sep-04 | Or was it spelled Munts? |
Sam J Unregistered guest | Muntz is the way I remember it. But as for being reliable, give me a RCA, Zenith, or Magnavox. Anyhow, I've heard alot about the hlp5674w, but what about the asking price (check the link above). If you add in the stand and an extended warranty, your talking $6K! I bought a JVC 4 weeks ago for $2.8K & couldn't be happier. The PQ on HD broadcasts rivals the Kirk with style of the 74 series. You can take a nice vacation with the savings! They will both be obsolete in another year! |
New member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 3 Registered: Sep-04 | There is good information and lots of misinformation on this bulletin board. But it is difficult to distinguish between the two. It would be helpful to see more links to authoritative sites such as samsungusa, etc., where people can verify for themselves answers to their questions. |
Giantdolphan Unregistered guest | RaiderFan, What were the specific dates for the the release? I checked with Hi-Fi Buys/Tweeter (Atlanta) and they show the 46 with 500 units available 10/22 and the 56 with 650 units available 11/2. Do you post over in AVS Forum? Thanks, Gus |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 12 Registered: Sep-04 | That's funny, I've seen the JVC in action, well I have to say I wasn't impressed,If you're talking about the JVC HD612575 model. The pq on the JVC was just just average compared to the Samsung 5085 & the Sony 60" XBR units. Does the CES 2004 awards sound familiar? Incase you didn't know about Sammy's achievements, goto the link below: http://www.cinenow.com/us/article.php3/id,1575/ |
Sam J Unregistered guest | If you think the PQ of the JVC was just average you either need an eye examine or the unit that you were looking at wasn't adjusted properly. I've been to a half dozen stores in my area comparing before I bought. The JVC HD52Z575 blew away the Sammy 63 series in all cases and matched up evenly against the Kirk in PQ performance. The Mits. & Toshiba all had great pictures but the side speakers made their dimensions unsuitable. As for the CES awards, my car was titled "car of the year" in 02 and it sucks. As for the Sony LCD you got to be kidding! As for Samsung's customer service your in for a real treat. |
Strati Unregistered guest | Sam J, Sorry to here about your JVC HD52Z575 purchase! There's a reason you paid $2.8K for this set. Personally, you OVERPAID! You might be able to compare this to the Sammy 63 series but when you say it's at par with the Samsung 85 series, you are speaking with total ignorance. I have two Best Buys near me in Toronto. In both the BB, they run the same HD channel. There's a part where it shows a waterfall and a beautiful blue sky. When you look at the sky you can see that the blue sky starts off nice and blue at the top of the screen and as you go lower, the blue seems discoloured; almost like a layering effect. Both BB stores have noticed this as well and are a little concered at fulheartedely recommeding this to people. Regardless of the $$$, the Samsung HLP5685 is THE HDTV to own! Rememeber, you get what you pay for! There's a reason you paid half the price for the JVC over the Samsung HLP5685. CNET just reviewed this product Sep 21/04. Why don't you see what they said about it as well as other JVC Buyers. http://reviews.cnet.com/JVC_HD_52Z575/4505-6484_7-30925113.html?tag=pdtl-list After reading this, you'll know why I said I'm sorry to hear about your purchase. I mean if you bought the "Car of the year" and it sucked, can you imagine buying this TV when not only reputable companies as well as owners of this JVC TV are saying it sucks! |
Bronze Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 23 Registered: Sep-04 | Strati- All I can say about Samsung is READ ALL THE POSTS. I see more problems with Samsung then Toshiba, Hitachi, JVC, and Sony combined. I checked out the HLP5685 at a local highend shop near by. The PQ was outstanding, but this set has some a/v sync issues, as do all of the Sammy DLPs. Read the posts, they will back my claim. I've seen the same problem with the HLP5085 at the local Fry's and BB. IMO this is totally unacceptable. After months of searching I had decided to purchase the HLP5085 until I noticed the sync problems with HD content, OTA reception and even DVD movies. The JVC had just been setup and I thought it was by far one of the best pictures out there so I bought it. I also really liked the Toshiba DLP, but it was just too wide for my room. I do think the sammy 85 series has a great picture, but how good is it when your TV doesn't work? I've had my JVC for over a month without an issue. Within that time I've never seen a bad thing said about the JVC, but page after page of 1 week old Sammys crapping out. I think no matter what set a person chooses, they are going to get an outstanding picture. But I think many people would want one that will work right. |
Sam J Unregistered guest | Thank you Mr. Lynch! As for Strati, his hostility must come from having too much money and not enough brains. Anyone stating "Regardless of the Money" and using BB sales people as authorities, says it all! I'm sure that the blue sky ref. above is the only concern in his life. And if he sees an additional rainbow in the sky (which has been a curse to many Sammy owners) well, Gee Wiz! Then again, maybe Strati is a stock holder in the company. |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 13 Registered: Sep-04 | I've own the HLP5685 for over a month and I have not yet to notice any imperfections, including any a/v sync problems, "knock on wood".I know it's early yet. The selling point was the great pq at BB, and not so match the styling. But you have to admit, the set looks like no other. Of course every set has it's pros & cons, but when someone trashes your set, it's an natural defense reaction that someone will respone. As far as the JVC's pq looking average, you (Sam J) maybe right about the HD broadcast setup at the store (PC Richards). They (PC Richards) made your JVC and other sets look their worst, even some Samsung units. And yes, you will get an excellent pq with many sets if the units are setup correctly. As far as you stating "As for Samsung's customer service your in for a real treat." I've spoke to someone in the Samsung's customer service dept, and I didn't get that impression at all. In fact they were very friendly & helpful. |
Anonymous | I've seen both the HLP5085 and the 52Z585 side by side and think they look quite comparable. My only question is why someone would lay down the extra money for a Samsung right now when you can get the HD2+ chip on any of the Thoshiba and Mits DLPs. |
New member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 4 Registered: Sep-04 | Does anyone have any experience with or reaction to the Toshiba 52HM84? |
New member Username: GregincaPost Number: 3 Registered: Sep-04 | I just saw the 52HMX84 and it looked really good on a DVD signal. I haven't been able to see it on HD yet. Seems like a good deal though, 2 HDMI inputs, HD2+ chip, swivel stand, the only thing it lacks is a Cable Card HD tuner. I don't think I would you that anyway though since there is no program guide with those yet and surfing through hundreds of chanells isn't my idea of fun. Best of all it was only $3K at a normal B&M store, $300 less than Best Buy for the higher end model. |
Bronze Member Username: Mr_lynchSeattle, WA Post Number: 26 Registered: Sep-04 | Chopper- Thank you for understanding what Sam and I were trying to say. I personally think the Sammy 85 series might nave the best PQ I've seen on any set and I really love the look of it too. I just do not trust the quality of Sammy products. I also feel that whatever set you take home and adjust correctly is going to look outstanding. Robert O'Reilly- I absolutely love the Toshiba 52hm84. At the Fry's near my place they had it sitting side by side with the JVC. I thought they were both incredible looking. After deciding against the Samsung, we narrowed our choice down to the JVC and the Toshiba. The only problem was that I only had 52" of space available for my TV. The Toshiba is 54" wide, the JVC 50". so we ended up getting the JVC. If I had more room we probably would have gone with the Toshiba, my wife liked the physical look of it better. I'm extremely happy with my JVC though. |
Anonymous | So I am considering the HLP5685 to purchase. Now I see that I can get this Toshiba 62HMX84 for a cheaper price. Both use the HD2+ chipset, but with the Toshiba, I save money and get 62" instead of 56". What are teh cons of teh Toshiba? |

The review sites SDTV signal processing and viewing angles as the main issues, although such seems to be mostly common to most, if not all, DLP sets. |

I had read elsewhere about one customer who was dissatisfied with SD and DVD performance while praising the HD quality as stunning. When I saw the Toshiba at BB, I was struck at how VERY BRIGHT the picture appeared in HD, |
New member Username: Walt_bPost Number: 3 Registered: Oct-04 | It's not an easy choice to make for a RPTV, but one has to take the plunge sooner or later despite evolving technology, e.g., TI's xHD3 chip (release date?) is supposedly a 5000:1 contrast ratio. Not to deviate from this DLP thread, but Panasonic has released a LCD front projector (Model AE700U) with a street price of about $2,100. Coupled with even an 80" diagonal screen (usually very affordable), it apparently gives the best of plasma, LCD and DLP televisions a run for the money even in low level ambient lighting, with throw-back at either 9' or 19' + on a 100" screen because of a 2x lens. A thorough review is due next week: http://www.projectorcentral.com/projector_news092904.htm The reason for mentioning this is that angle viewing and screen reflection issues are alleviated with front projectors unlike some DLP televisions, although SDTV broadcast quality is still likely an issue. Affordability is also brought into play, along with display size, etc. Then again, the Toshiba 52HM84 or 62HM84 appear very appealing and more affordable than perhaps a comparable Samsung (sync. issues still concern me with the Samsungs) -- although the DVD performance comment in Robert's post raised my eyebrows (except that the URL cited review gave high marks on DVD performance). JVC appears pretty good as well. I will appreciate any Toshiba end-user comments, especially as it pertains to DVD playback ... or in general for that matter. Thanks all. |
New member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 6 Registered: Sep-04 | I had a chance to see the Toshiba 52HM84 at BB. HD is excellent, but SD is quite poor, blurry and rough edges on images. For me, Samsung offers the all around best sets that I have seen. |

Anonymous | Walt, The web review you posted above does mention the lack of viewing angle(though I don't see it)and poor SD quality(which I agree with), but it also calls the Toshiba the TV they've seen so far performance wise. My feeling is I'd rather buy a TV that displays a better HD and DVD picture, than one that sucks less at displaying SD |

I e-mailed APC, a manufacturer of battery backup units, about using their products with a TV in order to protect the bulb from shut down sans fan in the event of a power failure. I had asked can I use a battery backup for just the TV (since only the TV needs to run in order for the fan to cool down the bulb), and let my existing Monster surge protector do the rest by way of surge protection. Here is the reply: ... For the best protection, you should have a unit that regulate the voltage 24 hours a day and give you the best protection as possible and protects against surges through the coax cable as well. The unit I suggest is the SUA750 or the SUA1000 with the PV. This unit uses a step up and step down transformor to regulate the same voltage to your DLP and protects against power surges. The PV protects against any surges that may come throught the coax line. ... make a note that it is against electrical code and voids our protection policy if you use a surge protector in conjunction with a ups unit. Why wait for the HLPxx74 models when there are a ton of other options. Toshiba, Panasonic, Mitsu, JVC, and others are all making some incredible sets. Samsung has some definite quality issues and an obvious lack of concern of their customers. The xx74 sets were suppose to be released in April, but all you hear about are delays, delays, delays. I wouldn't buy from a company who can't seem to get their story straight. It sounds like a lot of people are frustrated by this, I know I was. |

New member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 9 Registered: Sep-04 | Why blame Samsung for all the speculation that goes on in this forum? |
Anonymous | Robert, I don't think it's so much "blame Samsung" as it is hold them accountable... they splashed onto the scenes at the show, with promises of a next generation set... that set caught the eye of many aspiring next generation DLP owners, some being first time DLP owners to boot... They were elated to announce that the set would be delivered in April... third party vendors (based on Samsung's promise) advertise the set, thereby introducing it to the marketplace... some vendors even took orders... this created brand loyalty... But that loyalty was met with disrespect by Samsung when they delay shipment without explanation... at first, it's merely a month (May is the promise)... then, May becomes June, June to July, and here we are after numerous statements (via their informed surrogates) that October will finally be the date... they won't even stand by that either... The moral of the story here is simple - honesty and credibility matter in the globally competitive marketplace of today... Samsung enjoyed an "industry first" product in DLP sets... what they did not deserve to enjoy was a false brand loyalty whereby they promised delivery of a product via surrogates (as well as direct contact - read above posts)... Count me among the patient... I've researched, and subsequently waited for the 74 series since April... objectively read the angst above and ask yourself "how has Samsung answered consumers" with respect to delivery delays in the 74 series... they've done nothing to quell the angst of a techically savvy and loyal customer base... at best, they've been misleading... They can't have it both ways - promising an undeliverable product isn't the way to garner marketplace loyalty long term... they made the calculated decision that they could sustain their place in the market with the delivery of this set... but they were arrogantly unwilling to cede their inability to meet delivery schedule (at least without deserved technical explanation to a loyal customer base)... Ultimately, their greed obscured their view of a tremendous loss in customer loyalty... this is a classic business mistake, one which will cost Samsung an expanded following... let alone the potential loss of a generation of television owners (who in their right mind would "come back" to Samsung after being stung in this debacle)... To wit, I point to the 1999 Ford Mustang Cobra mess... Ford had enjoyed an "in class" lead in the low cost, high horsepower sports car line for years... the Cobra promised 320 HP, but when we (the consumers) took delivery of the vehicle, we began noticing lagged performance... the internet ultimately exposed that the dyno read nearly a full 100 HP less on average per vehicle... what a mess... The vehicles were recalled... some owners were offered "mods" that would "bring up" the HP to stated rating... the ownership base then took that mod to the dyno, and guess what - still about 50 HP shy... next, Ford began offering exhanges for a new 2000 Cobra... then that vehicle was delayed... again and again... one year was even CANCELLED... In the end, it took them a few years to get to the promised HP rating... however, a huge number of loyal customers left the Ford line... Ford Mustang has never recovered... depite a new vehicle introduced this year, I (for example) can't even look at the vehicle because of the previous experience... I dare say many others feel the same way... Samsung's plight is more severe... their a wide-based electronics company... do consumers "think twice" now when they look at other Samsung electronics? I know I do... Divorce from brand loyalty is a sensitive subject that 21st century companies need to be aware of... the internet has provided a forum whereby information empowers the consumer... the shady days of misinforming and misleading consumers worldwide are history... credible companies must answer (or at least quell) the legitimate questions of their customers, or else they'll find their market share shrinking as a result... All that said, yes - the Captain Kirk looks great on the showroom floor... those of you who abandoned the 74 series for the 63 are likely happy to have your sets at long last... congrats... but the purpose of my post is to plead our case to Samsung... Frustrated P.s. - I'm Frustrated, and I approved this message... |

New member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 10 Registered: Sep-04 | Caveat Emptor |
Anonymous | To the long post above about the delay, I wan to add this. For 5 years, I worked as an electrical design engineer for a large global corporation (and no its not Samsung, but the company name is irrelevant)that made car audio/video systems. For every project that I worked on, I had to make a schedule. The schedule was always theoretical based upon good engineering practice. You cant think of everything in advance. Furthermore, many of these tests take a long time to run. As an example, the prototypes migth run a life test (1000 continuous hours or more) units before beign released. On your shedule, it shows the test taking 42 days to run. It also shows that it was already done on an earlier prototype, and passed, so there is a high confidence in passing. therefore, you might have release, 3 days after this 1000 hour test. However, lets say you got a bizarre failure on the 41st day. You have to determine what failed, have teh fix implemented, and then rerun the entire test, as well as all of the other testing that has been done to make sure you will pass everything. You end up delayed 2 months, nothing you can do, except ignore the test results. What I learned is that problems can and will happen that you could never have thought of. When they do occur, you are faced with a decision, release the product with the problems, or fix the problem, and cause a delay. The luxury that samsung has with being first to market with DLP, is that they have product already for sale. They can continue to seel the product on the shelf, and delay teh new product. For the companies that dont't have any product on teh market, they will have much internal pressure to release, because they cannot have a way to make up for the lost sales that comes with delays. Here is one thing that comes with experience. In every design, once it has gone gold and been released, you will have a period of debreifing from teh project, whereine everyone involved will document the things that went wrong, why they went wrong, and what countermeasures should be taken in the future designs to prevent them from happening again. For a new project, this book is empty, but by 4th generation, the books gets rather full. People with that experience test for things that people who are just starting have never considered. Yes, the delay has been annoying for the 74 series. But ask yourself this, would you rather have had a product that was not as polished, or might have had a greater failure rate? I am sure that the engineers were working hard for release on time. Im sure they were pressured by their management and by teh sales/marketing people for results. But Im sure that some sort of problems happened, and they had to be fixed. There is a long running saying in design that goes somthing like a design process that was easy and had few problems was done by people who were not smart enough to find the problems that were there. |

I also would walk in BB & CC all the time waiting to see which models they would put on display. Finally, both stores hooked up the "Capt. Kirk" 50" model and I was immediately drawn to it, so were the other customers. I couldn't believe the vibrant colors and detailed pq on it. Sure, I've seen & compared the other units, but they all failed in comparison, interms of design, and not so much the pq, because the top sets had good pq. The Mits however, looked pretty damn good, except for the horrible reflexive screen, which I understand can be removed. I could have purchased any hdtv set on the market, so I bought the 56" Kirk, and I couldn't be any happier. I love Sundays now, football in hd, WOW!!! I have to make sure I make the right choice so I rather wait for the 1080p HDTV with the xHD3 chip, that way I am covered once 1080p programming, movies, video games, etc... starting coming out. The Capt Kirks are awesome looking that's for sure. |
giantdolphan Unregistered guest | RaiderFan, Thanks for the update last week...Word over on AVSForum.com is that we are looking at mid-November on the 74's....Any updated info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gus |
RaiderFan Unregistered guest | giantdolphan, I'm sorry I can't give you a better update than I have. My source says the earliest is the 3rd week of this month and the latest is the last week of October. Please call around and you will see that as mentioned in a few other posts they are taking orders now on a widespread basis. There sure is alot of FUD being spread around hear about this model. Gus I will give you an update as soon as I get more info. I'm feeling good about this info. TMSKILZ, I was wondering if your decision to wait is mainly because of the 1080p upgrade? Because what I'm hearing from the broadcast guys is it's going to be some time before they are broadcasting in 1080p type resolution (years)? So, if that's the case what does the 1080p bye you in the mean time? Thanks for the info? |
Giantdolphan Unregistered guest | No problem.... Thanks again! Gus |
Bronze Member Username: TmskilzPost Number: 63 Registered: Jul-04 | Raider Fan, HD-DVD's will be making their way onto stores by the end of this year from LG Electronics, followed by SOny next year & others. 1080p broadcasting won't be common, but I say by the 4Qtr of next year you will see some 1080p stuff whether by DVS (MS already has WMVHD) & TV broadcasting. I rather wait for the xHD3 1080p TV that way I'm prepared down the road when 1080p HD content is widely available. Whether one buys the Capt Kirk 85 series now or waits for the 1080p set, they're both big investments money wise. I've saved up enough right now to buy it if it were available now. I'll just keep saving up so I can also purchase a nice affordable surround sound system to compliment it. Go Cowboys! |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 12 Registered: Sep-04 | Can someone please address my naive questions? Will the viewing experience between the eventual 1080p resolution and what we have currently with Samsung's "85 series be that much different? In other words, why might it be worth waiting for the xHD3 technology? What will be the viewable differences? |

Anon Ymous Unregistered guest | You people have nothing better to do than to criticize other companies. Be it Samsung, Sony, JVC, etc...whatever! They'll release their products when they think it's right to do so. After the release of the Samsung 74, you "winers" will complain about the xHD3 not coming out on your time schedule! Use this forum to praise / report about your experiences with a product you own or have product knowledge from a credible source (ie. being able to back up your claims). The person above signed off "frustrated"! Buddy, be frustrated at yourself for being impatient, NOT with a corporation. Why don't you call Intel next and tell them to speed things up! |

On 9-17-04, I bought a TV with mod # HLP 4663 WX/XAA. I don't know what this means. But the TV set on the back has an "Aug 04" date. (I have to reply to TMSKILZ ("Go Cowboys"). I think Bill Parcells is a very good coach, but he acted like Barry Switzer refusing to kick the football last week.) |
Engineer Unregistered guest | I think RaiderFan's question of what 1080p buys you is partially answered by the fact that 1080p gives you a progressive scan of 1080i which is a higher resolution picture than 720p, especially when the subject matter is not fast moving. It also means that the abundant 1080i material does not have to be down-converted. |
PhilJ Unregistered guest | Reply to DanIowa.. I placed an order through LGD Superstore for the 5674W back in April. The last time I checked with them they said it would ship in 2 weeks. Thar was Sept. 1st. I went ahead and bought a JVC 61z575. (football season was coming) 61 inch vs 56 for the Sammy and $1200 cheaper. ($3250). Very happy with the set. HD is great But now I notice the poorer quality of the SD channels. |
PhilJ Unregistered guest | An afterthought on my above post. I know everyone is hoping to get the "looking through a window" pq, But EVERY set I have seen has different results on different channels. Some are better than others. You may think a particular TV look great at the store (and they do) But try to check out regular channels if your store has the feed. Also, the BB here runs a looping video which I am sure is optimized to sell TV's. So try to check out a HD channel. My closing remarks...does anyone know when the FCC is going to mandate that all channels are HD (and more importantly, make sure the HD is quality)? |
Unregistered guest | 1080P Viewing distance??? A good rule of thumb is that your viewing distance to an HDTV set should be about 3.2X the screen's vertical height for a set with a native resolution of 1080i and 4.8X the height for a set with a native resolution of 720P. Can anyone shed any light on ideal viewing distance for a set with a native resolution of 1080P? I ask this question because, while not locked in concrete, the smallest of the initial Sammy 1080P sets may be 61." With my viewing distance maxed out at 10', I am wondering if the 61" set, if that's the smallest they offer, may be a bit overwhelming. |
RaidersFan Unregistered guest | Engineer,TMSKILZ thanks for the info. I did some of my own research and I better understand the differences know but I'm not so sure that either DVD's or MS new tech. I think by the time you get the bennifit from going with 1080p there will at least 3 new generations of DLP's with TI's now latest chip set. Thanks for the info, BTW as I have posted so many times before Steve is my contact at Samsung also. |
Engineer Unregistered guest | 1080 is 1080, whether interlaced or progressive. It is the number of lines displayed. Obviously from our expenience with DVD's we all know that progressively scanning them reduces the flicker and gives us an apparent improvement in the picture. So receiving HD material in 1080i and presenting it on a progressive display will decrease the flicker. The disadvantage comes from material that moves rapidly such as sports. That is the reason the sports channels have largely chosen to stick with 720p. You get a complete new picture 60 times per second rather than 50% refresh 60 times per second as with 1080i. |
Sam J Unregistered guest | Just an observation on HD programming in general, especially on ABC & NBC, I have experienced on average about twice a week on these two networks that their HD broadcasts sometimes experience audio problems that go unsolved for almost the entire evening. Last night watching ABC's "Medical Investigation" the audio had problems throughout the entire show. I have watched ABC's "Lost" and NBC's "Vegas" & "LAX "where the voice tract was missing and all you got was the backround audio, "car horns, dogs barking, planes taking off, etc., but the lips move without a trace of the voices. Don't know if the trouble is with the network, the local broadcaster, or with Comcast cable. No problems with the other 10 or so HD stations. |
Doug Unregistered guest | For what it is worth, my local TV store said they can now get the HLP5674W on special order for $5999 plus taxes. The price seems a bit steep. At this moment, I will probably pospone any decision until the price becomes more reasonable or an internet store can help me with setup. |
Anonymous | That is steep. I ordered one locally for $4,100.00 provided the MSRP is $4,599...the retailer did say if the MSRP were to increase, then we would have to renegotiate a price..it's supposed to ship in a couple weeks. |
himo Unregistered guest | Does anyone have any idea of the JVC D-ILA lamp life and cost? I find this info very difficult to find. It would seem to me that the cost of 10 year ownership should take a major role in my decision to buy. |
Sam J Unregistered guest | On the JVC there is a message that will display after 6K hrs advising you to order a new bulb. Cost $250 from JVC parts dept. Have owned a 52" set now for 6 weeks. Still very happy with the set. HD broadcasts are outstanding! You have 1 yr parts warrenty through JVC (unlike many other manufactures) and you can double that time free by registering it with your credid card company. |
Anonymous | The average lamp life of the Quartz-Halogen lamps used in DLPs is 8,000 hours (called MTBF or mean time between/before failure). A normal TV viewer (not the all day kind) is watching about 40 hours a week (isn't that awfull?). So, bulb life is about 4 years. I bet replacement bulbs will be in the $150 area by then. On the lip sync problem: The computer in the TV is very busy processing the video signal. For analog broadcasts, the processing time is very long in order to make a half decent picture. For 760p HDTV, it is almost "0". So, Lip sync is a big problem on analog broadcasts and no problem on 760p broadcasts. Now, Samsung will come up with an audio delay algorithm that will solve the problem, but those of us using the digital audio feed out of our cable boxes will have to live with the picture delay problem. Of course, the broadcaster can screw this all up as well. |
Mike Sullivan Unregistered guest | Like many folks I'm very taken with the quality of the HD image on various (plasma, LCD, DLP) sets at BB, CC and others. I really covet that better quality image. But I don't watch that much TV, even less in terms of rented DVD's. I read posts like those here because I want to learn, and I'm interested. So here's the basic rub/question. Is there a technology out there NOW that will give me HD (cable & DVD) quality and at the same time not diminish (i.e. not one iota) the quality of standard TV signals as I know them today. If the answer is no, then why spend thousands of dollars for higher quality definition on programs that make up less than 20% (or whatever) of what I watch while at the same time getting less quality on the other 80%. It would seem to me that for a very large portion of the population this could be the seminal question. It is for me. It's compounded by all of the tecno geek verbage in forums like this (720, 1080, "i", "p", yada, yada) that scare people to death. I'm not opposed to spending $3-4K for image improvement but I don't want the installation, set up, cost and other hassle just so I can be "with it", all the while suffering a loss of quality for the majority of what is broadcast today..... and for the foreseeable future. Thoughts? Mike |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 13 Registered: Sep-04 | Dear Mike, I share your concerns. HD is very good at broadcasting programs in high definition. But if you watch standard definition programs most of the time, chances are you will be disappointed with their quality on an HD set. I have not seen any DLP sets that handle both SD and HD equally well, and that includes Samsung, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi. |
Marten Unregistered guest | Regarding the poor quality of SD content on DH sets, I just want to clarify that it has nothing to do with weather the set is HD capable or not, but is rather a result of the screen being that much larger. That leads to the image quality being perceived as worse. If you move close enough to your current SD set to create the same viewing angle as you would have with the larger HD set you are comparing it to, the picture will look at least equally poor. Also, about the HD availability, most people don't spend their TV watching time equally distributed over the 100+ channels available. When you take the skew towards the main stream channels like ABC, NBC, CBS, HBO, ESPN etc, all of which are available in HD, plus DVDs, into account, you will end up with a much higher number than 20% of the content being available in HD. But yes, if you spend most of the time watching CSPAN, E! or the Food Network you will have limited use for an HD set at this point in time. |
Doug Unregistered guest | It appears the HLP5674W is more expensive than I thought it would be, so I have been looking around for an alternative. Has anyone seen the Philips 55PL9773 DILA TV? I wonder how its picture compares to Samsung TV? See http://www.tvauthority.com/DILA-and-LCOS-TVs/Philips-55PL9773.asp for details. What is the next best choice to HLP5674W? Any opinions welcome. |

Fry's in Seattle has the Philips for $2200. I was not impressed at all. Philips recently dropped their LCoS line of TVs. The single chip format they were using had a lot of problems. You can read about some of the issues here: https://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/forum/home-video/4777.html |
fred64 Unregistered guest | Why would anyone go for a higher priced 74 series, when the 85s are better? They provide >2500:1 contrast vs 2000:1. |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 14 Registered: Sep-04 | The physical design of the 85 series has serious drawbacks compared to the 74 series. The 85 series makes no accommodation for components, and the side speakers are a visual distraction. |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 18 Registered: Sep-04 | True, the 85 series has no accommodation for components by itself, but if you purchase the newly designed TR85X tv stand specificly designed for this unit, you should have no problems placing your components. As far as the speakers are concerned, I don't find the speakers distracting at all, especially if you are using separate main speakers as part of your home theater setup. The 85 has one the most innovative design with great hd pq to match. |
Doug N Unregistered guest | I believe the audio snyc issues have to do more with the network's feed and your cable company than the actual tv. I have the Samsung HLP4663WX. I experiences synch issues occasionally and they seem to happen only on HD channels when I am watching something live (e.g. the baseball play-offs). However, during the commercial breaks, the sync problem is gone. This would seem to imply that it is not the tv, but the feed. Additionally, I know one person with a Pionner Plasma and another with a Fujitsu Plasma and they both have told me they have the same problem. |
Bronze Member Username: RforeillyPost Number: 15 Registered: Sep-04 | The new stand for the 85 series is an additional $500. |
Going crazy in WI Unregistered guest | Can't someone just tell me when the Samsung 5674 is coming. I've had this cabinet waiting since May! |
Bronze Member Username: Chopper414New York, New York Post Number: 20 Registered: Sep-04 | Has anyone purchased the TR85X tv stand for their 85 series? |
Doug Unregistered guest | As I said in earlier posts, I am having second thoughts about the HLP5674W because of its expense. At the moment I am leaning towards the Toshiba 62HMX94. It uses the HD2+ chip plus their own video processing chips. It has a built in HDTV tuner. It allows you to view pictures from memory sticks without buying additional equipment. It costs less than the Samsung and seems to have more features. Hopefully the picture quality matches the Samsung. |
no name Unregistered guest | What "expense" for the Samsung 5674 are you referring to? The "list" price that I've seen is $4599 or $4499..but my retailer priced mine at $4,100.00....and is supposed to arrive first week of November. How much is the Toshiba you refer to? |
Doug Unregistered guest | To no name: The Toshiba is $3699 plus $275 shipping from Plasma Planet (http://www.plasmaplanet.com/PROJECTION_TVS/TOSHIBA/62HMX94.htm). My local retailer said $5999 for the Samsung. Does one need to buy a HDTV tuner for the Samusung? That is unclear to me. |
Jeff Harrisburg PA Unregistered guest | I purchased the Toshiba 52HM84 and was very pleased for two days. It was incredibly bright. The bulb can be set at 100 or 120 watts and 100W was plenty in my moderately bright family room. The picture was clear and the colors vibrant. After two days, the image acquired a green tinge which could not be compensated for with the tint control. At $3500 I easily shy away from problems. I returned it and got a Sony 36" HDTV CRT direct view. It's only 33" on a 16:9 picture - but that's livable. The HD picture is incredible. It's hard to beat a CRT for contrast and clarity. 480p DVD and even standard TV (it line doubles and upconverts) also look quite good. And it saved me $2000. It's a nice bridge while the more expensive DLP (and other) technology has time to settle out. It's also weighs in at 230 pounds! Guess you can't have everything. And in case you haven't heard, Intel has abandoned their LCOS project. |
Bronze Member Username: TmskilzPost Number: 68 Registered: Jul-04 | HaHa to Intel and LcOs! Amd64 & DLP rules! |
DaveM Unregistered guest | I suspect that the problem with the Toshibas for some will be the side mounted speakers. For me, width is important, and I like the smaller bezeled frames. As an alternate to the HLP5674W, how about the upcoming Mitsubishi WD-52825? I've waited patiently for the sammy, but may consider the Mitsubishi instead... once I learn more about it and see some reviews. |
