HD novice here and if this question has been asked before I sincerely apologize.
A firend told me that ALL channels will be in high definition by May 2006. Is that true?

No! The FCC mandate only applies to digital broadcast not HD broadcast. In fact I suspect it will be closer to 2010 before the digital mandate requirements are met. ie: 80% of the US households have a digital TV.
