Very basic question

to get Dolby Digital and DTS effects, i'm assuming you have to use the optical in/out on the receiver/DVD player with an optical cable.

otherwise, how would you get full 5 channel separation if you used the red/white analog RCA cables.

is this correct?

does the video go through the optical port as well?

thanks.

You have to use the optical/digital in/out or if you have 6 channel analogue you can get the separation as well. The red/white analogue is for stereo separation or pro logic applications.

No, the video does not go to the optical port. You have to use video inputs on your receiver or TV, via composite, s-video or component.

People have their preferences. Neither is bad!
