How Was That Not a Hit? Bruce Springsteen

What separates a hit song from those that never had their 15 minutes of fame? We revisit My Father’s House by Bruce Springsteen.

Bruce Springsteen Nebraska Album

What separates a hit song from those that never had their 15 minutes of fame or were relegated to one hit wonder status? Black Circle Radio Host, Mitch Anderson, shines the spotlight on songs that deserved a much better fate and belong in every music collection.

On this week’s episode of “How Was that Not a Hit?” – we take a trip to the Jersey Shore and a tiny house in Long Branch where Bruce Springsteen created some of his earliest albums. “My Father’s House” by Bruce Springsteen was one of the strongest tracks off the Nebraska album but it never caught on with the audience. Springsteen went back to this topic on the underrated The Ghost of Tom Joad and the stripped down song remains one of his best pieces of songwriting.

Bruce’s fans did not overlook ‘My Father’s House.’ They loved it. But they knew it from the album, where it stood out among a lot of other great acoustic songs. His hit singles that made it on radio were mostly faster-paced rock songs such as ‘Born to Run’ and ‘Badlands,’ and ‘The Rising’ later. His fans bought albums the way we bought singles in the ‘60s —whatever he released. I don’t think the song suffered from a lack of attention.
